I see that on the ZC website, in an article titled 'Domestic programme ready to roll', there is a paragraph which says,
"There have also been a number of players offered contracts to play club cricket in England and the IPL in India, and the dates of the domestic competitions had to be sensitive to their commitments which are crucial in the development of the players careers and the consequent improvement of the standards of the local game".
If this a true comment on the relationship between the ZC board and the players then I think it is to be applauded, although I still feel that with the domestic programme slated to go on until june 2nd that this must clash with any players due to take up contracts in England.
Maybe they mean the likes of Ryan Butterworth, Craig Ervine, etc... the players that aren't centrally contracted but still have commitments. As far as I know ZC's stance on playing club cricket overseas hasn't changed, but then again it may have.
Who would be a pro cricketer in Zim these days
Why
wouldn't you be a cricketer in Zimbabwe? If you're half decent you'll play First Class cricket, no questions asked. I don't know how many First Class cricketers there are, but I'd say maybe 40,000 in history. It's a pretty exclusive club. Of course, at this point there would be no financial reward. I doubt the Logan Cup cricketers get anything like the other Test playing nations domestic players get.
I'm sure the national players get decent salaries (if not, I'm sure we would have heard about it by now), so for the better players there is money, plus a pretty good chance of playing ODI's (even more exclusive) and Test's (more still).
My serious cap back on now, I know what you're saying. But like with any field, if you are good at something you will reap the rewards.
As the series thread is now redundant, I've merged it with the existing Logan Cup thread. We can bring back the series thread if/when it happens later this year.
