Re: Series thread - Logan Cup 2008

THE Zimbabwe cricket domestic calendar has now been firmed, following extensive consultations with the national team coach, manager, physiotherapist and other stakeholders.
The confirmed calendar took into consideration the need for the national team players to take part in domestic competitions. However, after their participation in the intensive MTN Domestic Championship that saw them grappling with a hectic schedule of play and travel leading to physical and mental strain, there was need to afford them a rest period before engaging them in the local game.

Further to that, a number of national team players are currently carrying, or recovering from, injuries. They include all-rounders Elton Chigumbura and Sean Williams and bowler Gary Brent.

There have also been a number of players offered contracts to play club cricket in England and the IPL in India, and the dates of the domestic competitions had to be sensitive to their commitments which are crucial in the development of the players’ careers and the consequent improvement of the standard of the local game.

The A section of the local twenty20 tournament will be played in Harare from the 19th to the 21st of March 2008.

The B section of the Logan Cup, is on in Bulawayo from the first to the 11th of April, followed by the A section which is on from the 17th of April to the 20th of May. The country’s premier knockout tournament will see action in the capital, in Bulawayo, Kwekwe, Masvingo and Mutare.

The last tournament is the Faithwear One-Day Series. It will be played in Bulawayo from the 27th of May to the second of June.
Apparently ;)

Taibu will miss the Logan Cup as it now clashes with the IPL - although he's still expected to take part in the T20 comp this week.

I don't think that Taibu missing the tournament is that bad a thing to be honest, he'll be playing higher standard (and much higher intensity) cricket in the IPL. So long as he doesn't miss any national team games, I don't think it matters too much, although it would be preferable if a player of Taibu's ability was available for the Logan Cup...

If the dates are correct that they are quoting on cricinfo today, then Zim cricket looks set for another bout of problems.

The Logan Cup, they say, is to run from april 17th to may 20th and the Faithwear Cup from may 27th to june 2nd.

What will now happen to any Zim players who have arranged pro contracts in England ?

They could well be breaking their English contracts if they remain in Zim until after 2nd june and, of course, suffer financially. If they honour an English contract starting, for example may 15th, then they will be making themselves unavailable to play in Zim and suffer, well, what will they suffer at the hands of ZC ?

Unlike the other carrying on in cricket at this time, ICL, IPL, the players themselves are going to lose out one way or the other through no fault of their own whatsoever.

Who would be a pro cricketer in Zim these days

Perhaps I have been a little unfair to ZC.

I see that on the ZC website, in an article titled 'Domestic programme ready to roll', there is a paragraph which says,

"There have also been a number of players offered contracts to play club cricket in England and the IPL in India, and the dates of the domestic competitions had to be sensitive to their commitments which are crucial in the development of the players careers and the consequent improvement of the standards of the local game".

If this a true comment on the relationship between the ZC board and the players then I think it is to be applauded, although I still feel that with the domestic programme slated to go on until june 2nd that this must clash with any players due to take up contracts in England.

Maybe they mean the likes of Ryan Butterworth, Craig Ervine, etc... the players that aren't centrally contracted but still have commitments. As far as I know ZC's stance on playing club cricket overseas hasn't changed, but then again it may have.

Why wouldn't you be a cricketer in Zimbabwe? If you're half decent you'll play First Class cricket, no questions asked. I don't know how many First Class cricketers there are, but I'd say maybe 40,000 in history. It's a pretty exclusive club. Of course, at this point there would be no financial reward. I doubt the Logan Cup cricketers get anything like the other Test playing nations domestic players get.

I'm sure the national players get decent salaries (if not, I'm sure we would have heard about it by now), so for the better players there is money, plus a pretty good chance of playing ODI's (even more exclusive) and Test's (more still).

My serious cap back on now, I know what you're saying. But like with any field, if you are good at something you will reap the rewards.

As the series thread is now redundant, I've merged it with the existing Logan Cup thread. We can bring back the series thread if/when it happens later this year.
