I am serious about selecting him and any other young prospects. We need to get them Zimbabwe eligible before they defect. Select them in a meaningless game against Kenya or something, bat them at 10 and don't let them bowl.

The ICC is not FIFA.

I think ff has pointed out a flaw in your thinking - unless you think that there is a shorter route to foreign jersey's by means of never having played for your own country!? I don't know the laws but i would be doubtful that is possible ... whether he debut's or not for Zim he will still be able to qualify for another country if he goes through the motions of doing so ala Ervine, KP, Trott...

Well sure, but changing nations is less appealing when you have a longer wait.

I'm not sure whether the laws have changed again, but I think every kid from Zim who wants to play for England has to serve his 5 year (residency) qualifying period first. Could be different where double passports are concerned, but I really don't know.

As far as I know, it's residency, not nationality - so if a player is currently in Zim, selecting them or not makes no difference. The ICC's qualifying period is still 4 years from when they start playing in England. (Although did I see the ECB had changed their own rules to 8 years? My mind may be playing tricks on me.)

England can use that the other way around to nobble other countries, though. See a promising young foreign player in the counties? Sucker them into playing a few matches. Then they have to spend 4 years re-qualifying for their 'home' side.

I remembered something about that too. After some digging on the ECB website, I found this.

With regards to the ICC qualifying period, I believe the 4-years can be reduced at the ICC's discretion ala Ed Joyce re-qualifying for Ireland.

Yeah, so Ballance and Ervine remain qualified for England, but nay new Zim players going up there will have to wait 7 years. That is plenty of protection for cases like Ballance. But it does not help us in the CC 1 import rule. I think the counties should be allowed one import from top teams and another from Zim, Bang, and the associates. That would allow our better players to have a chance of the CC and not unbalance English teams too much.

I also think it is a good idea to blood players when they are young. If you give them a taste of international cricket, perhaps they will stick around too.

It could also be a great way to discover new talent. Masakadza, Taylor, Taibu all burst on to the scene as teenagers... domestic form can be a bit deceiving, but if a kid comes along and notches up an international half century or better as those three did it's pretty much proof that you've got something to work with.
