ZC to build new cricket stadium in Gweru
Re: ZC to build new cricket stadium in Gweru
It is absolutely very concerning and very telling that with all the issues Zimbabwe cricket have, two new stadiums are the priority.
Zim have never had an issue with lack of stadiums ever. The logical conclusion is money laundering or siphoning.

Can someone explain issue with Vic falls stadium.
When county sides come and their staff they can really tap into tourism aspect of falls as well as when international sides come over.
Backdrop is amazing and hopefully will be well used.

The argument for not playing first class matches outside of Harare is that ZC can’t justify the cost to bus players to e.g. Kwekwe.
So are they really going to fly players down to Vic falls?!?
This will be the biggest white elephant in the country.
It will get used for the 2027 WC (I hope there are plenty of paramedics on hand for the heat exhausted players - and good luck to any fans wanting to sit there for 8 hours watching a cricket match) and then after 2027 I highly doubt it will be used at all. Maybe miraculously if India or England ever tour they will play some games there. That’s about it.
Maybe it will end up as a concert venue or strip Club like Queen’s has. Who cares about cricket?!

I saw someone on social media justifying this (and the wider surrounding development) as ‘look at Dubai in the 90’s….it was nothing’.
As if Vic Falls is the next fucking Dubai
I nearly spat my sadza out

The only countries likely to bring any significant tourists with them are England and Australia and maybe India. How often do those three teams tour?
No county fans are flying across the world to follow their team in some pre-season friendlies. Vic Falls or no Vic Falls.
Have you ever been? Good luck with the climate. And the mist.
I can’t think of a worse climate to play cricket in.

And that’s before we mention just how much this is going to cost when we have significantly more pressing issues in our cricket.
This is absolute madness. It really could be the straw that breaks the camels back and kills cricket in this country once and for all.

The fact the president has given it his seal of approval is the biggest alarm bell of all

Well it will either be next to the falls and have a stunning backdrop but the mist will make the ground unplayable half the time, OR it will be nowhere near the falls themselves and therefore not have a backdrop.

People are not going to travel to Victoria falls to watch Durham play trial games

People travel to Africa for wildlife and nature. Not for county cricket. People don’t even watch county in England let alone Zim.
There may be, keyword *may* be an argument for a multi purpose stadium built there, for soccer, rugby and concerts etc
But then let the Zim gov pay for it.
