Whatmore had too many enemies in the system. Foreign coaches obviously have more privileges and im sure that gets under the skin of quite a few guys who are used to getting whwt they want.
I agree that the selectors are more important than the coach. For me I think the selectors should be the head coaches of the 5 domestic sides we have(thats including the rising stars). Why? Simply because these guys have the most interactions with all our players. For example, I just read that Zhuwao scored a double century in a recent practice match. Me sitting at home and being a fan will call for his inclusion in the team. The coaches who were actually there might have seen him getting lucky and playing a sloppy innings. This probably happens all season In the end they are the ones who know these guys. It doesnt make sense having someone based in the UK like Taibu telling us who deserves to play.
It would also encourage the senior guys who are always bunking domestic games to go and play. Thats a very bad habit. We cant have a situation where Craig Ervine has only played about 6 first class games more than a kid like Brian Chari. This needs to change. Chari is 26. Ervine 33. In fact Raza and Williams have played less FC games than Chari. How is that even possible?
Zimbabwe Head Coach hunt: 8 Shortlisted
Re: Zimbabwe Head Coach hunt: 8 Shortlisted
Whatmore was treated unfairly and was getting results with the side.
Won ODI's v NZ and Pakistan
Won an ODI series v Ireland
Won a t20 v India
Drew 2 t20 series v Bangladesh in Bangladesh
All this whilst losing his best Batsman BT and his best bowler Chatara straight after the WC.
He lost his job because of the 4 series losses to Afghanistan and losing to them at the t20 WCQ, but Zim nearly won both ODI series despite missing key players for the majority of both series.
I feel Zimbabwe would be in a much better position if Whatmore was still the coach.

I wonder if he’s received his money yet? I don’t think Phil Simmons has been settled either, and that’s a long time ago.
This sacking of coaches before their contract ends ticks quite a few boxes, it’s a smoke screen for the real issues to keep them in the driving seat and they don’t seem to pay them in full so it’s coaching at half price.
There’s no coach in the world that will ever get us off the bottom of any of the three tables, that’s a fact. 15 years of gross incompetence and theft have put us so far behind we will never catch up. It will never happen. We don’t have the players, the pathways or the structures in the schools, clubs or provinces. Whilst we may improve under judicial management we will do so at a slower rate than other teams. Cricket is improving in leaps and bounds. How are we going to get off the bottom rung with these muppets driving the bus?
What are ZC looking for in a coach?
The occasional win?
Respectable losses?
A yes man that doesn’t argue about selections?
A PR man that tells journos he’s amazed at the local talent and that preparations are going well? He can only do that for the first few games before he has to lapse into sullen silence.
A foreign coach can always pack up and leave after having earned $20-$25k a month paid offshore, whilst he obviously wants to make an impact it’s not the end of the world if he does diddly. He’s there primarily for the money. One guy is earning the same as the salaries for an entire franchise. However good this guy may or may not be, he will leave in disgruntled disgust before his tenure is up.
The likes of Streak and Flower would forever have to deal with the race issue, past and present. That culture was set up by ZC, and players, administrators and other staff have sadly and pathetically continued to run with that.
The coach is only as good as his support staff. Who are the batting and bowling coaches? How many do we need to wade through before everybody realizes they’re not the problem or the solution. The longer ZC are allowed to do this the deeper we become mired in our failures. Our cricketing issues require Zimbabweans to solve them. We have the right people.
