There's no doubt these T20 tournaments have taken the shine off internationals.
Personally I like the 50 over format the best, but I'm in the minority.
ICC have as usual fucked it up by making it a 10 team format. If they had their way they'd have India North Vs India South and call it the World Series.

NZ are looking a good side.
I smell something like the NBA or the superbowl  You win and get the tag of world champions

While I do agree that T20 WC at the moment looks more appealing, not least because it's more inclusive and exciting, it is not fair to blame the ODI format as such SZ.

I think poor pitches and a 10 team format has got it boring.
It’s been a logistics failure from BCCI mostly. Adding 4 teams even weaker than SL wouldn’t make it more exciting. It would make it more inclusive. That’s more of an ICC game development issue rather than one of tournament quality.

Australia vs Indian looks like is going to be a thriller.

It’s not just the fact that there are only 10 teams (although I despise that), but it’s the round-robin format that is the killer. Lasts for about a month. No jeopardy in the first few weeks. And then towards the end there will be loads of dead rubbers. Absolutely awful format.

Used solely to ensure India have minimum 9 games.

Having said that, I do think overall a 12-14 team World Cup with 2 groups is the best format overall. 5-6 games guaranteed for all. But the ICC needs to ensure reserve days for all games otherwise even one no result can really impact the points table.

What would be the alternative though in this day and age?

Something like the football World Cup model maybe? More teams, smaller groups for the round robin stage and a bigger knock out phase than straight into the semi final and final. 24 teams in 6 groups of 4 or 8 groups of 3. Group winners, runners up (and best placed 3rd placed teams depending on the format) progressing to a last 16 for the knock outs.

If india were as awesome as they think they are then they’d progress regardless.

4 groups of 4, then straight into the quarter-finals.

But the broadcasters won’t like it and the BCCI would never allow it.

Ya, I’d considered a 16 team tournament but decided various interests wouldn’t let it fly. I arrived at my version trying to balance making more games mean something, less dead rubbers but maintaining the overall duration of the tournament for broadcasting and revenue purposes.

In my version the group stage of 24 would effectively be the qualifiers and group stages of the WC proper rolled into one.

I’m a big advocate of expansion but 24 teams in the 50-over version would be too ambitious.

I think 16 in the ODI WC and 20 in the T20WC is optimum for giving enough teams a chance without drastically lowering the quality.

If everyone is in the tournament it does cheapen it tho. I think 14 is probably the ideal number at this point. If you took the top 14 teams, Nepal and Namibia would miss out and ideally that’s what you want. You want a marquee event where some decent sides miss out. It puts that value on the World Cup. Especially since the T20 WC has 20 teams now and is more frequently played.

Except that a couple of good lesser sides will miss out the much needed pay day that essentially keeps them alive.
As usual I don't agree with you.
