Zim Provinces season review

Post by aydee »

3-day averages:

In general terms, the bowling was usually fairly impressive, whilst the batting largely disappointing.

Chakabva excelled with the bat, averaging over 50. However, none of his regular top order partners managed any consistency at all, Nyamuzinga, Mujuru, Kasteni, Mawoyo & Duffin managed only 6 fifties between then in 50 innings. Cremer did show some promise as an allrounder, although he failed to get to fifty. Also, note diappointing returns from national team regulars Masakadza, Matsikenyeri & Chibhabha in their occasional appearances.

The bowling was generally far more encouraging. Cremer & Rainsford were superb, and must be in contention for the next international fixtures. A team regulars Garwe & Mahwire were also pretty good, and on some occasions quite threatening. Manyumwa's record is excellent, but is heavily boosted by one return of 5-29. His end of season efforts, and one day record suggest that his figures here may flatter him... Jury out.

A lot less cause for encouragement than in the first class games, Zim were generally outclassed. The batsmen managed a total of 6 fifties between them in 7 matches (and 2 of these were from national team regular Masakadza at the very start of the season), and no bowler managed to total 10 wickets. Whilst no batsmen can take much credit from the one day games, Cremer, Muzarabani and Kamungozi put in creditable, economical efforts with the ball.

I was dissapointed with zim provs this series I thought that they would come out and put up a good show against what is really much weaker south african sides and win the compitition.. out of 7 games they only won 2 lost 3 and tied 2 thats dissapointing considering they played a decent 11 on everymatch with a few international players in the team like Duffin, Rainsford, Mahwire and others played a few games like Matsikenyeri and Chibahba they should of definatly won many more games.

Zim can take positives from their bowling Creamer was impressive with both ball and bat, Manyumwa got a few wickets and so did Mahwire and rainsford.

and the one shining light from the batting department was Chakabva he scored runs and i think hes knocking at the doors for National selection

i think between rainsford mahwire and cremer they have close to 400 first class wickets between them so it was dissapointing that they coudnt have blown the inferior opposition out more comprehensively..they did pretty well though, I think it was the batsmen who let them down truth be told

The SAA 3 day final is under way today, the final of the 3 day competition is shown as a 4 day game  , and after winning the toss Western Province rolled Griqualand West over for 144.

In the SAA 1 day semi finals Northerns 172-9 beat Eastern Province 157 by 15 runs and Gauteng 297-5 thrashed South Western Districts 88 by 209 runs which means both finalists will be from Pool B which Zim played in, ironically Northerns were the one and only win for Zim. The final will be on saturday.

That doesn't seem so strange. The Pura Cup (4-day competition) has a 5 day final, and the Ranji Trophy (or Duleep, or whatever the hell their provincial domestic competition is called - there's so many ) has a 5 day final too. I think it is firstly to reward the players for getting to the final, secondly to give them a feel of what playing in a Test would be like, and thirdly to ensure that the game doesn't end a draw. :)

I'm all for the return of 'timeless test' cricket at all levels, just think of the value for money my membership at Sussex would give me if we had 7 day county matches

Not much of a day for the batsmen in Kimberley, it doesn't look as though they will be needing 3 days let alone 4.

Griqualand West out for 144 in 45 overs and Western Province finished the day at 142-7 after 49.

Lucian Simpson took 5-27 for WP, highest score for GW was Petrus Koortzen with 36. In reply Richard Levi managed 49 while Charl Pietersen took 4-35 for GW.

Not much of a showpiece final as far as the batsmen were concerned.

Day 2 finished early due to bad light with WP having been dismissed for 155 in their 1st innings, GW managed 227 in 55 overs 2nd time around, Audrey Swanpoel top scoring with 59. WP were 43-3 at the close.

Day 3 started with WP needing another 174 more to win with 7 wickets in hand. They were bowled out for 174 giving GW a 42 run win, Dominic Telo made a brave single handed effort before being left high and dry on 99*, Charl Pietersen had the best figures of 4-64.

So, we have the 2 finalists in the SAA 1 day both from the Zim pool and now the 3 day winners come from Pool B as well, any chance of a transfer to Pool A for next years competitions :?:
