By Mehluli Sibanda
THE Zimbabwe senior national team is expected in Bulawayo on Friday to start preparations for the triangular One-Day International series against India and Sri Lanka.
Newly appointed coach Alan Butcher, whose first assignment was leading Zimbabwe at the International Cricket Council World Twenty20 in West Indies where they bowed out in the group stage, will have six days in which to asses his players before they go into battle against the two Asian giants.
Zimbabwe Cricket head of media and communications Shingai Rhuhwaya confirmed that the national team would be landing in Bulawayo on Friday. She said the team goes into camp in Gweru tomorrow before proceeding to Bulawayo on Friday.
Last Friday the national selectors named a 15-member squad for the series and five more players who will be part of the training. Midwest Rhinos seamer Edward Rainsford has earned a recall to the national team after nearly a year in the wilderness. He last played for the national team against Bangladesh at home last year.
Also in the 15-man list is Matabeleland Tuskers fast bowler Christopher Mpofu who is expected to have recovered from an injury on his finger by the time the triangular series starts.
Mpofu fractured the little finger on his right bowling hand when he took a catch in the deep to dismiss Sri Lankan batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan during Zimbabwe’s first match against Sri Lanka at the forgettable International Cricket Council World Twenty20 in the West Indies. Mpofu went for X-ray last Monday, which revealed a fracture on the small finger and a plate was placed around the finger to aid recovery. The plate will be removed two days before the start of the matches.
Selectors’ convener Alistair Campbell said the injury to Mpofu was not much of a worry and the lanky bowler would be considered for selection for the triangular matches.
“Chris Mpofu’s injury is not serious. Players sometimes play with broken fingers so he will be considered for selection for the first match of the series,” said Campbell last Friday.
With another fast bowler Kyle Jarvis sidelined by a long term back injury, Mpofu is the key pace bowler for Zimbabwe together with recently appointed Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura and Rainsford. The selectors have also called up five players to provide backup for the series and these are Matabeleland Tuskers left handed all-rounder Keith Dabengwa, the Mountaineers trio of pace bowlers Shingirai Masakadza and Tendai Chitara, leg spinner Timycen Maruma and Mashonaland Eagles wicketkeeper Foster Mutizwa.
Zimbabwe take on the Mahendra Singh Dhoni captained India at Queens Sports Club in the first match of the triangular series week Friday before they clash with Sri Lanka, led by Kumar Sangakkara at the same venue two days later. The series then moves to Harare Sports Club.
At the end of the triangular series, India will stay behind to play two Twenty20 Internationals against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club on 11 June and 12 June.
Zimbabwe squad for triangular series: Elton Chigumbura (captain), Gregory Lamb, Tatenda Taibu (wicketkeeper), Vusumuzi Sibanda, Craig Ervine, Brendan Taylor, Hamilton Masakadza, Prosper Utseya, Graeme Cremer, Raymond Price, Edward Rainsford, Christopher Mpofu, Andy Blignaut, Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Charles Coventry.
Players in training squad: Keith Dabengwa, Foster Mutizwa, Tendai Chitara, Shingirai Masakadza, Timycen Maruma.

That seems to be the case according to this piece as well.
Disappointing to see no Williams anywhere near the squad. What is the story now?

So, there are authorities "above" the selectors, still?Zimbabwe have shortlisted a largely unchanged squad from the one that played at the Twenty20 tournament with Ed Rainsford the only addition on a list that was still to be approved by the authorities by yesterday.

That's not fair to player like Sean Williams, he should be selected in the squad because he is the most consistent & reliable player in the country. He knows well then any other selected player that how to stay at the pitch? How to built the partnership? How to rotate the strike? No one is better then him in selected 15 players squad. Selectors have still a lot of time to select him in the squad and do justice to a deserved player. If they still not selecting him in the squad then it will be a biggest blunder and un justice to Zimbabwean Nation & Cricket Lovers. Come on guys it’s time to do fair selection if anyone of you think that Sean Williams really deserve his place then post a reply simply “Select Sean Williams & do justice”.
Best of Luck Sean Williams.

Statistics. Matches-Runs-Average
H.Masakadza. 90 – 2420 – 28.13.
Vusi Sibanda. 84 – 1796 – 22.17.
Tatnda Taibu. 117 – 2340 – 27.20.
BrendnTaylor. 97 – 2594 – 29.81.
Chrls Coventry. 27 – 685 – 28.54.
E. Chigumbura. 108 – 2241 – 24.35.
Andy Blignaut. 51 – 625 – 19.53.
Gregory Lamb. 5 – 60 – 15.
C. Chibhabha. 49 – 1034 – 21.10.
S. Williams. 41 – 983 – 29.78
Here every one can see that he is one of the highest average holder in the Zimbabwe cricket. Only Taylor has 0.03 runs more average than Sean Williams and that isn’t too much difference. We can count both at highest average in the Country. Then why Williams is not part of the team since last six months? Selectors should give a solid reason that why he is not in the team? Because performance & statistics are in front of every one where no one can beat Sean Williams.
Best of Luck Zimbabwe.

Re: Ed Rainsford for Maurma only change in 15 man sqaud
Stats alone can be misleading. Even then, how about this: in that abject tour of SA in 2005, he came in and made 33 in a total of just 198 on debut. Against Pakistan http://stats.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/rec ... ;type=tour he averaged 48 in the five one dayers; 19, 48, 71, 3, 51* (next best average was Taibu at 32). And these were by no means weak bowling attacks.asif wrote:Asif Ali.................From Pakistan.

More revealingly, Kingviv, if you insists on stats go look at William's domestic records & compare them too to his international records and you will a clear correlation and consistency in his performances (nobody else averages 40 or even close in First Class).
I must say I agree with much of what you have to say in these forums but in this case you are much mistaken.
