Brent and Dufin Quit
Re: Brent and Dufin Quit
Really crappy news to be honest. This constant stream of players shows no real sign of stopping any time soon. Which it has to do if Zim are to regain test status/ever be genuinely competitive. No Zim side in history could afford to be regularly losing players, least of all this one.
Duffin isn't a particularly big loss in terms of the national team itself. He has had very limited success at international level, isn't the youngest of the current crop & has been in particularly poor form this season. However, he would have lent quality and international experience to the domestic competitions, where his prescence would surely have been invaluable for Southerns.
Brent is a different story. He has been a regular in the national side recently, and one of the more successful players. He was outstanding in the MTN Championship, so losing his bowling is a real blow to the current strength of the national team. Whilst Duffin's exit may well have been on the cards, as he hasn't featured for Zim recently and wasn't playing in the Logan Cup, Brent has been a national team regular and was playing for Northerns only 2 weeks ago. So his exit is a surprise...
It's hard to stay positive about cricket in Zim when this kind of thing keeps happening. You always feel that the next crisis is iminent. Every time it looks like Zim has turned the corner and can start moving forward again, there is another blow, very frustrating.

Re: Brent and Dufin Quit
That's really bad news if true. Just as things were beginning to look up off the field. As mentioned above, Duffin is no great loss as he hasn't been part of the set up for over a year anyway, but Gary Brent was a near automatic selection. I suppose Zimbabwe are somewhat lucky that Tawanda Mupariwa is a ready made replacement, they are nearly identical bowlers, but Brent was more experienced and more capable with the new ball.
Brent's batting down the order was a bonus as well, he was capable of scoring quick runs as well as contributing a decent score (eg. 59 vs South Africa). This is a real shame, I was expecting Brent to be a key member of the squad when Zimbabwe resume Tests.
I suppose the new bowling attack will consist of:
7. Chigumbura
8. Utseya
9. Price
10. Mupariwa
11. Mpofu
It looks depleted, but I can't think of any better (available) fast bowlers than Mupariwa and Mpofu. You could stick Cremer or Maruma in, but that weakens the fast bowling unit even further.
As long as there are no further departures, I think Zimbabwe can weather this storm...

Re: Brent and Dufin Quit
I agree, as Zim has just about "weathered" far greater storms recently. However, if there are no further departures seems to be such a big if. You can't help but worry about the futures of the likes of Williams (who hasn't been playing for a while - injured??), Rainsford, Taibu, Price, Sibanda, even Taylor...brmtaylor.com admin wrote:

Re: Brent and Dufin Quit
This is a kick in the nuts for me which i am finding hard to beleive. Brent leaving us? We can't afford to lose anymore players or else we are finished.
Re: Brent and Dufin Quit
Cricinfo also ran the story on Sibanda leaving which turned out to be false!!.
It does seem strange that brent was unhappy with the selectors seeing as he was picked in almost every match. or perhaps he might have thought some other white players were being discriminated against perhaps..Who knows.
All im saying is wait till you hear it from the horses mouth..perhaps im clutching at straws but i do hope Brent has not left the zim set up

im a bit like jimbo im atleast hoping the Brent bit of the article is false
Re: Brent and Dufin Quit
A very sad loss indeed if it turns out to be true. The steady stream of players leaving Zimbabwe doesn't seem to show any signs of ending.
Neil Johnson, Alistair Campbell, Murray Goodwin, Andy Flower (w), Grant Flower, Dave Houghton, Guy Whittall, Heath Streak (c), Andy Blignaut, Ray Price, Eddo Brandes

Re: Brent and Dufin Quit
Well it must be true then if you have heard it from the media manager!! I was in denial for a while as i obviously didnt want to believe it!!. Duffin cant really moan too much as he had a bad strike rate at ODI level and really needed to play in the logan cup and upcoming fairwear matches to re-stake a claim in the Zimbabwe side. he cant just pick and choose his matches after all!!!!!
As for brent..This one is really strange. ' Selection Issues?'.. I dont really know where he is coming fronm on this one but i suppose there is two sides to every story and when these two men do decide to give interviews for their reasons to the press their statements will give much more clarity and understanding
