HARARE - Zimbabwe batsman Hamilton Masakadza and St John’s College schoolboy Eddie Byrom’s 145-run second-wicket partnership inspired Country Club to a one-wicket win over Old Hararians in a Vigne Cup match on Sunday.
Old Hararians totalled 234 all out in 49,3 overs with Stuart Matsikenyeri top scoring with 78 runs.
Masakadza and Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor opened the bat for Country Club and the later was out in the third over after he was caught behind. Byrom, the 15-year-old son of former sports journalist Glen Byrom, then scored 59 runs, backing his senior Masakadza, who top-scored with 76 runs in a 30-over, 145-run partnership.
Country Club’s middle order collapsed in clusters and with one ball remaining, they needed just a run to tie the match and two to win.
Seamer Richard Muzhange hit former national all-rounder Pete Rinke for six over backward square after he tried a bouncer to give Country Club a one-wicket win after reaching 239 runs for the loss of nine wickets.
Masakadza picked four wickets in his six overs while Muzhange took two wickets in 10 overs with Rinke and Kyle Hopper both taking three wickets each for Old Hararians.
Country Club fielded a star- studded line-up that included Ed Rainsford, Mluleki Nkala, Simon Mugava, Calum Price and Stanley Chioza.
In another thrilling match played at Harare Sports Club, the host beat Glenshire by 22 runs with six balls remaining.
HSC were sent to bat first, scoring 294 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 50 overs.
Glenshire ran out of steam after a spirited chase to be dismissed all out for 272 runs in 49 overs.
Opening batsman Jaylord Gumbie managed to score 64 runs off 70 balls while number three Ashley Karuma hit 54 runs off 77 balls for Glenshire as Tatenda Gumunyu-Manatsa picked three wickets for 66 runs from 10 overs for Harare Sports Club.
In the battle of Takashinga, the second team and defending champions Takashinga 2 won by 58 runs after defending 203 runs by restricting their opponents to 145 runs in 33 overs. Regis Chakabva and Charles Kunje scored 53 and 57 runs respectively for Takashinga 2 while seamer Tanya Kagumba took four wickets for 21 runs from nine overs.
For Takashinga 1, Johnson Marumisa and Timycen Maruma scored 34 and 22 runs respectively while Wellington Masakadza, Nyasha Mupurura and Tino Mutombodzi took three wickets each.
Meanwhile, Royal recorded their first win of the season after beating Old Malvernians by 74 runs at Prince Edward.

What unbelievable experience for a 15 year old! Can't help but make him a better player. It's excellent to see club cricket back on the map, and being taken more seriously this year. Hopefully these strides will continue, and be mirrored throughout the country, rather than just in Harare. It will be interesting to see how the national league pans out later this year.foreignfield wrote:Thanks for the pictures. Great to see these youngster mingle it with the "big" boys.

Masakadza is a bit of a blubberguts.
A talented batsman but a modest, hardworking character, Stuart Matsikenyeri is the third of three school friends from Churchill Boys High School, Harare to represent Zimbabwe in international cricket. - Cricinfo.

Better select Byrom for the national side before he goes to the UK, even if it is for one game.

Two very exciting prospects here in Sam Curran and Eddie Byrom. Both breaking records at their age is very impressive and exciting! I hope they stay, even if to just play first class cricket
