Dion will lead side in the new season

Stony Stratford Cricket Club begin their 2009 Hevey Building Supplies Northants Cricket League Premier Division season at home to Northampton Saints on April 25.

The following week sees Stony visit Brixworth, whose new squad includes none other than former England fast bowler Devon Malcolm.

Stony finished last season strongly, losing only two of their last 11 games while winning four and they will be hoping to bring that sort of form into the new season.

Former Zimbabwean international Dion Ebrahim returns for a third summer at Ostler's Lane and he will again captain the side.

Northants' decision to play a younger Academy side in the top division this year means that several of their 2nds will spend the summer playing club cricket and as a result Stony have signed promising all rounder Nathan Hawkes for the season.

This is a great boost for the club, who have also recruited several new players of a good standard over the winter.

Promoted to the Division Three last season, the 2nds will again be led by Chris Swain.

They will go into the season confident of making an impression against new opponents having won 12 games last summer and finishing in second in Division Four.

They open their season with a visit to Old Northamptonians 3rds and then entertain St Crispins Rylands.

Stony 3rds have been the club's most successful side over the last couple of years sealing successive promotions in the last couple of seasons under skipper Andy Preston.

He leads the side once again, this time in Division Seven and they begin their campaign on May 2 at home to Cogenhoe.

The 4ths will be captained again by Mike Smith and they begin their season in Division Six of the Morrant Four Counties League at North Crawley 3rds on May 2.

Club contracts rule out international return

Ewing and Ebrahim head to New Zealand

Two of the players who have turned their backs on Zimbabwe's national side have agreed club contracts in New Zealand, in effect signaling their intention not to return to international cricket.

Gavin Ewing has signed up for Inglewood Cricket Club in the Taranaki District Cricket League in New Zealand. He leaves Zimbabwe on Wednesday to join his new club. He recently returned from England where he led Paignton to a third-place finish in the Devon Premier League.

Ewing will be joined in New Zealand by Dion Ebrahim, who finished as the leading run scorer for Stony Stratford Town Cricket Club in Northamptonshire.

Ewing, 26, retired from international cricket last year citing neglect by Zimbabwe Cricket after he suffered a stress fracture and headed off to England while Ebrahim went to England after Zimbabwe Cricket did not offer him a contract.

Ewing and Ebrahim are just some of the players still owed money from the New Zealand, India and Kenya series in 2005. The players are still holding onto cars that were issued to them when they were still contracted to ZC and have vowed not to return them until they get their money.

Ewing wins case against Zimbabwe for back pay

Gavin Ewing has won his long-running court case against Zimbabwe Cricket for payment of outstanding match fees dating back to 2005.

Ewing was one of a handful of players who walked out on Zimbabwe cricket after the home series against India and New Zealand in August and September 2005. He was owed fees from those and previous tours, but after months of dispute, ZC eventually agreed to pay but, according to those involved, only offered almost worthless Zimbabwe dollars instead of US dollars which was its contractual obligation.

Several of those involved, including former captain Heath Streak, Andy Blignaut, Stuart Carlisle and Dion Ebrahim, refused to return sponsored vehicles belonging to the board until the matter was settled. Harare's high court ruled that ZC had to pay Ewing the sum owed in US dollars and that he had to return the board's car.

It is likely that follow-up cases will be brought by other players involved, although in view of the court's decision it may well be that ZC decides to settle.
