MATABELELAND Tuskers Cricket Franchise’s new coach Wayne James has named national team all rounder Sean Williams as his team’s captain for the coming season.
In an interview after meeting Matabeleland Tuskers players for the first time as their coach, James said Williams would be the skipper for all the formats taking over the captaincy from Gavin Erwing.
“Williams is our new captain for the season. He has been working very hard and I am sure this kind of responsibility will make him work extra hard. I also believe that the captaincy will bring greater things for the team.
“There are a lot of senior players at Matabeleland Tuskers who I believe will make Williams’ reign very much easy,” said James.
A former Zimbabwe national cricket team fringe player, James said he was pleased with the calibre of players at his disposal and was looking forward to a pleasant working relationship with the reigning Logan Cup champions.
He took over from ex-Zimbabwe national cricket team captain Heath Streak who turned down an offer to renew his contract.
James has been heavily involved with Matabeleland Tuskers’ off-season Cricket Academy and last season was in charge of the champions for their first matches when Streak was away on tour with the national team.
“The meeting with the players went on very well because I know most of these players on individual basis as I have worked with them before. I am excited with the job and I can see the players are also excited, they are committed and skillful people who I presume we are going to get positive results,” James said.
Some of the players who attended the meeting yesterday include John Nyumbu, Njabulo Ncube, Bradley Staddon, Brian Chari who spent the better part of the off-season at the national academy in Harare and young Goodwill Mamhiyo who has just returned from club cricket in England.
Tawanda Mupariwa who spent last season at Southern Rocks also attended the meeting held at Queens Sports Club.

Great to hear. When does the Domestic season begin. Cant wait for it. I am going to Zimbabwe in November and hoping to catch a game.

Something tells me this wont be a season for the Tuskers. Good on Williams, well deserved. Losing Streak was imminent. They look very light on batting after the defections and retirements. If people like Chari and Mamhiyo don't fire regularly, we will hit "Rocks-bottom"
Re: Sean Williams to Captain the Tuskers this season
I dont like the look of Rocks losing Mupariwa to Tuskers again.
Re: Sean Williams to Captain the Tuskers this season
Guess this confirms Sean is not in BD playing in the DPL .....
Yeah i think they may struggle with Duffin and Ewing retiring, both the Ervines unlikely to return, Mooen Ali is also absent from last years line up along with Choppa looks like it's left to Sean to score all the runs ,.....
I wonder if Meth and Querl will return ......
Chari is highly spoke of even though his record is nothing special maybe a chance for him to step up ......

I feel Querl won't be back. Meth, based on getting paid, may be?jaybro wrote:I wonder if Meth and Querl will return ......
We have lost the likes of Tafadzwa Ngulube, Bonaparte Mujuru, etc. too, so, who will keep? Toni Mupariwa? I will be surprised if Tuskers can put up a squad of 15 this time around.
Things looking this bad, I might switch my support to the Mountaineers mid way through the season...

Querl is back in the country so i imagine he will resign for the Tuskers.CrimsonAvenger wrote:I feel Querl won't be back. Meth, based on getting paid, may be?jaybro wrote:I wonder if Meth and Querl will return ......

Fairly sure that Meth will be back to, Kyle Bowie is the one i would also like to think would be around this season, he is not going back to Aus and he wants to be a pro cricketer so must end up somewhere

That's encouraging.zimfan1 wrote:Querl is back in the country so i imagine he will resign for the Tuskers.
By the way, we haven't heard from any of the other franchises though. One would guess most of Eagles and Mountaineers squads would remain in tact.

Eagles start their preps
Mangongo commits to Mash Eagles

The Zimbabwean cricket development stalwart was on a one-year contract with the Harare franchise side last season following the tragic death of former coach Kevin Curran in October.
Mash Eagles won the Pro 50 Championship after beating Matabeleland Tuskers by five-runs in a rain-hit final in Bulawayo and were runners-up in the Twenty20 competition won by Mountaineers.
Eagles, however, failed to make an impression in the premier first class four-day competition, the Logan Cup, exiting the tournament without a single win. The Eagles finished in bottom place with seven points from eight matches.
The same season saw the Eagles lose to Southern Rocks and effectively handing the Masvingo-based franchise their first Logan Cup win in three years. Matabeleland Tuskers won the championship for thethird time in succession.
“We are busy preparing our squads and hopefully will be starting totrain as soon as the franchise hierarchy gives us the nod,” Mangongotold the Daily News yesterday.
“We have got unfinished business at Eagles and need to sort out anumber of issues that I felt we lacked last season.”
Eagles have lost former Zimbabwe strike bowler Kyle Jarvis, who took up a three-year County cricket contract with English side Lancashire last month.
Mangongo, however, believes his side has enough depth in the seam department.
“We had quite a good bowling attack and Jarvis wasn’t playing regularly in the side having spent a greater part of the season playing in New Zealand last season,” he said.
“We have young seamer Tatenda Gumunyu-Manatsa who is back from injury, experienced Innocent Chinyoka is also available as well as other rookies. So we are not worried that much, although we have lost a competent bowler of Jarvis’ stature.
“Our main worry is on the batting front and we are in negotiations with a couple of players as we look to bolster the squad in that department, it’s still premature at the moment to disclose the names but we are hopeful that by end the end of the week we should be in a position to provide the names.”

Will be interesting to see what the makeup of the franchises is this season.
I am willing to bet we will lose quite a lot of senior players but hopefully quite a few youngsters will start coming through from the last two batches of the under 19’s
