Talented all-rounder Sean Ervine is set to make a return to international cricket at next year’s World Cup following his inclusion in Zimbabwe’s preliminary 30-man national team squad for the tournament.

Ervine (28) made it clear that he was prepared to make a return to the national team after being unveiled by local franchise Mountaineers before the start of the Stanbic Twenty20 series last month.

In an interview with NewsDay, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) convener of selectors Alistair Campbell said Ervine’s presence in the team would be a huge boost ahead of the tournament.

“We have been talking to Ervine and at the moment the negotiations have gone well as he is very keen to represent his country and he should be signing a contract with us soon.

“His presence in the team is definitely going to be a huge boost; especially in the batting department both at the World Cup and as we eye a return to Test cricket next year because he will bring a wealth of experience,” Campbell said.

Ervine has been featuring for county side Hampshire since 2004, when he quit international cricket alongside 14 other senior players in 2004 after a dispute with the local sports’ administrators.

He has played 42 ODIs and five Tests since making his debut against England in 2001 and is set to join his younger brother Craig, who was Zimbabwe’s best player at the just ended tour of Bangladesh.

Campbell said the return of medium bowler Tawanda Mupariwa was also a step in the right direction as he could also play a key role in the World Cup squad.

The seamer, who has enjoyed a decent run with Tuskers, at one time fell out of favour as Zimbabwe searched for genuine pace bowlers.

“Mupariwa has had a good season in the domestic limited overs competition and would be a good addition to the team as we have struggled in the seam bowling department where Christopher Mpofu fought a lone battle in Bangladesh.

“In the batting department Tino Mawoyo and Terrence Duffin have also done well. Because as we are a bit biased on the World Cup at the moment some players might be key additions next year when we look to return to Test cricket ,” said Campbell. The duo last played for the national team in 2006 and 2007 respectively.

There were also places for two uncapped players in 19-year-old leg-spinner Natsai Mushangwe and 21-year-old pace bowler Njabulo Ncube. The team will be trimmed to 20 players early next year ahead of the global showpiece in February.

Squad: Elton Chigumbura (captain), Regis Chakabva,
Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Charles Coventry, Graeme Cremer, Keith Dabengwa, Terrence Duffin, Craig Ervine, Sean Ervine, Greg Lamb, Timycen Maruma, Tinotenda Mawoyo, Hamilton Masakadza, Shingirai Masakadza, Keegan Meth, Christopher Mpofu, Tawanda Mupariwa, Natsai Mushangwe, Forster Mutizwa, Njabulo Ncube, Ian Nicolson, Tinashe Panyangara, Raymond Price, Ed Rainsford, Vusimuzi Sibanda, Tatenda Taibu, Brendan Taylor, Prosper Utseya, Malcolm Waller, Sean Williams

if this eventuates we need to move on to tony ireland as target number 1.

that would solve the pace issue.

once we solve that we move on to ballance.

then cameron.

the main thing is to get sean into those colours ASAP.

Organise a backyard match with kenya oer namibia, because once he is in the colours he cant qualify for england for another 4 yrs!

not that the likelihood of him being good enough is more than a slim chance.

i said he would come back for test cricket and the world cup . great news makes the batting and bowling look 1232434333444555 times better.we actual have a genuine all rounder now. he would bat top 5 and probaly bowl 1st change something we have needeed soince our skipper lost form. here would be my 15 man squad for the world cup

BAT
1.B.Taylor
2.H.Masakadza
3.S.williams
4.T.Taibu (wk)
5.S.Ervine
6.C.Ervine
7.E.Chigumbura (c)
8.P.Utseya
9.G.Cremer
10.R.Price
11.C.Mpofu

12.G.lamb
13.R.Chakabva
14.T.Mupariwa
15.S.Masakadza

this squad has class and power all through it . lamb as the back up spinner if the others fail a well as a bat. then chakabva is taibu struggles or gets injured and mupariwa and masakadza if the pace battery fails. im really excited and hopefully we can find form and consistency and play some quality cricket that we are capable of. i think we can beat bangladesh , new zealand, west indies , pakistan ,sri lanka and even england if we are 100percent on our game. the top order has a good mix of left handers and right handers with power down the order and class up the top. best team we have had since the streak days.very exciting times ahead

We're taking tiny tiny tiny steps to regain all the rebel players at the moment.
We've got Ray Price, Grant Flower, Heath Streak, Andy Blignaut (Who we thought would never play again!) and now Sean Ervine back in the fold. It's really really really great news that he's resolved his issues with the board, thumps up to him and Alistair Campbell.
But i don't like the inclusion of Twanda Mupariwa. No pace, and on the subcontinent wickets i reckon he's get slaughtered. I hope that's not the case though :)

i love how in all these threads people will start posting their team selections randomly.

could be a thread on the weather and someone will post their top zimbabwean 11.

anyway i have a few sources at the moment that are telling me sean has gone awol and is chillin with a few homies somewhere in the zimbabwe bush with some cigaweed and fishing rods.

And this is makng the hampshire bosses really irate, they had no idea sean plans to return and may even block it contractually if true.

Hampshire manager Giles White expects Sean Ervine to play for the county next year despite his call-up to the provisional Zimbabwe World Cup squad.

Ervine, 28, is contracted to Hampshire until the end of the 2011 season but will have to revert to overseas status if he wishes to play for his country.

White told BBC Solent: "I'll speak with Sean and get to the bottom of this but I expect him to be with us next year.
"We've offered him a new deal and he's said he'd like to take that up."

The final 15-man Zimbabwean national squad for the 2011 ICC World Cup will be selected in January and the tournament is due to start on 19 February.

If selected to play, Ervine will revert to an overseas player - but Hampshire have signed Pakistani leg-spinner Imran Tahir to fill that role.

The all-rounder, who has 42 one-day caps for his country, quit international cricket in 2004 alongside 14 other Zimbabwean players after a dispute with the local sports' administrators.

White admits he was surprised to hear Ervine had been named in Zimbabwe's preliminary 30-man national squad.
"I only found out about it today so I didn't realise he would be called up," White added.
"I will be interested to find out more about it because he is under contract with Hampshire.

"I will try to contact Sean [Ervine] but it's difficult as he's on a farm in Zimbabwe, but we will get him on phone and sort things out so we can move things forward and hopefully get some clarity."
Hampshire have already started putting pressure on Sean here.
