Yeah. Another fast bowling allrounder would be good though, someone in the mould of Chigumbura who we can rely on to bowl 10 good overs and also contribute with the bat. Probably Manyumwa is looking the part at the moment, but perhaps needs to work on his batting more. Inversely, Nyamuzinga can bowl seam up but seems to be more of a batsman than a bowler.

We are fortunate that Chigumbura and Cremer are so handy with the bat, it allows us to have a lot of flexibility within the team - such as playing the 3 spinners. If we could have 3 spinners and 3 seamers, I think that would be the perfect balance. But unless Cremer develops his batting to the point where he can bat comfortably in the top six, the third seamer will need to be an allrounder.

Northerns complete an innings victory

Northerns 510 for 9 declared 132 overs (R.Chakabva 131, B.Taylor 95, T.Taibu, T.Kamungozi 2/110, B.Mugochi 2/158)

Centrals 1st innings 122 all out 42.5 overs (R.Mutumbami 38, T.Mahlunge 32, Ray Price 5/6 A.Manyumwa 1/11)

2nd innings 98 all out 29.5 overs (B.Chapungu 28, B.Mugochi 27, A.Manyumwa 5/25 R.Price 4/28

Northerns beat Centrals by an innings and 290 runs

NORTHERS complete an innings and 290 runs victory over Centrals, a feat that looked routine after day one of proceedings as they put them to the sword with some outlandish batting that mesmerized their opposition into submission in the fourth round of the Logan Cup at Alexandra Sports Club on Thursday.

After forcing Centrals to follow on Wednesday afternoon, Northerns got on to their demolition act with spin maestro Ray Price and strike sensation Admire Manyumwa especially devastating with a five wicket haul for just 25 runs.

The Elton Chigumbura captained side who declared on 510 on Wednesday quickly wiped Centrals for just 122 runs at stumps, still 388 runs short and enforced the follow on from which they finished them off for just 98 runs as Price (4/28) and Manyumwa (5/25) tore into the batting order with style on Thursday.

Northerns needed just six overs after lunch to close the log sheet and file the shift until Monday when they play Westerns at the Academy ground in the penultimate round of the series.

Bothwell Chapungu top scored with 28 and tail-ender Bright Mugochi at number nine was second on 27 as seven batsmen failed to hit double figures in a brief spell of just 29.5 overs drawing the match to a close with a day and a half to spare.

As if losing was not enough Centrals opener Kudzai Maunze suffered a suspected broken fingure after he was hit by an Elton Chigumbura delivery to retire injured after just one run from nine balls. His unfortunate spell lasted 18 minutes.

Robertson Mutumbami, Kudzanai Mahlunge and Blessing Mahwire went for ducks as they could not handle the lure of spin and the hurricane of pace. Theirs was a troubled occupation with Mahwire falling for a duck twice to spinner Price in the series especially draining.

After dominating on day one of the fourth round, the Kevin Curran coached side piled runs at a frenetic pace and was very effective in their bowling with Centrals finding themselves at the end of a side that is still very disappointed at throwing away victory to Easterns in the third round, just before the Easter break at the Academy.

Northerns victory coincided with the return to form of Tatenda Taibu (92) and Regis Chakabva, who hit a fabulous 131 with Brendon Taylor (95) acting as a sweetener. His half century fashioned out of some fabulous shots made the job for Northerns very routine.

They face Westerns with their form at the best and if what they displayed with both ball and bat is anything to go by, then another stirring match is in the offing.

esterns chasing 200 to win on day 4 of Logan Cup

Easterns 200 and 276 (S. Matsikenyeri 142, S. Nyamuzinga 48; S. Williams 3/60, J. Nyumbu 3/104, C. Mpofu 2/46)

Westerns – 265 and 12 (M. Mabuza 106, T. Mupariwa 39, F. Takarusenga 33; N. Mushangwe 3/61, P. Utseya 2/38, P. Kadzitye 2/45, S. Masakadza 2/55)

Stumps Day 3 of 4-day match.

Easterns resumed their second innings on day three of their Logan Cupmatch against Westerns with only one run on the board for no loss.

The opening pair of Bernard Mlambo and Tinotenda Mawoyo only managed to add five runs to their overnight score before Mlambo (3) was caught by Sean Williams at gully. Mlambo’s fellow opener Mawoyo barely lasted at the crease as he became Mpofu’s second victim of the morning. Mawoyo (6) edged a wide delivery to wicketkeeper Ngulube who took a simple catch. Mawoyo’s innings lasted 61minutes and he faced 30 balls.

In came the Easterns captain Hamilton Masakadza who tried to build a partnership with another Zimbabwe international, Stuart Matsikenyeri but the runs were difficult to get as Westerns bowled tightly, making life difficult for their opponents.

At drinks Easterns were 18 runs for the loss of two wickets. The first boundary of the innings came when Masakadza pounced on a loose Tawanda Mupariwa delivery to drive it away for four.

Westerns bowlers’ maintained their discipline and were duly rewarded when inform off-spinner John Nyumbu came to bowl. His first victim of the day was Hamilton Masakadza (18) who edged and again Ngulube made no mistake behind the stumps.

This brought to an end a partnership that had been looking solid. Zimbabwe A captain T. Maruma came to the crease and only faced six deliveries before lunch.

Easterns were now 56 for three from 27overs. At this stage Westerns were set to bowl out their opponents quickly and possibly taste their first win of the tournament. After lunch, another partnership started forming between Matsikenyeri and Maruma.

The partnership could have been broken when Matsikenyeri lofted a drive off Nyumbu to long on boundary but substitute fielder Thabo Mboyi misjudged the catch and it fell just in front of him.

With the very next ball, Maruma edged another one past Ngulube who had no chance of taking the catch. Westerns continued with their brilliant bowling which was complemented by superb fielding.

Just after the drinks break, Westerns found the breakthrough when Maruma was brilliantly caught by Williams off his own bowling to leave Easterns at 119 for four. The Zimbabwe captain, Prosper Utseya, was to follow the next over when Nyumbu had him caught behind by Ngulube without scoring. He was Nyumbu’s second victim of the day.

Forster Mutizwa came to the crease and did not last as well. With his tail not doing much to help, Matsikenyeri stood above everybody else, at one time lofting two consecutive sixes off Nyumbu.

His 142 runs off 204 balls anchored the innings which saw Easterns set a lead of 211.Western were 12 without loss at the close of play, with Taurai Madiri on one and Freedom Takarusenga seven.

If Taylor is coming to the UK to play for Lashings only and not club cricket, then it may be better if he says on in Zimbabwe for the last couple of rounds of the Logan Cup,certainly the cricket will be much a much better standard. Lashings only play 35 or 20 over exhibition matches against school sides and clubs celebrating an anniversary and their first fixture (if the details on Lashing's web site is correct) isn't until 12th June.

Well, at least he made a return. :)

Also worth noting, Tarisai Mahlunge made a return for Centrals this round. I guess the lure of First Class cricket was too strong for Mugochi and Mahlunge :)
You can't help but be impressed with Mugochi's career - 56 wickets at 22.03 (2.78 economy). We should get this guy in the Zimbabwe A team pronto. I know we have an abundance of spinners, but a strong second eleven is just as important as a strong first eleven as it keeps the first eleven players on their toes, not getting complacent.

4th round report on cricinfo although it's too short,I reckon...

Logan Cup 2008-09 4th round

Price wraps up big Northerns win

Cricinfo staff

April 24, 2009

Northerns had few hassles in beating Centrals by an innings and 290 runs in Harare. Their massive first innings of 510 for 9 was set up by Regis Chakabva's career-best 131 and good contributions from Brendan Taylor (95) and Tatenda Taibu (92). In the field Ray Price returned fine figures of 8.5-6-6-5 to keep Centrals to just 122 and, following-on, they were dismissed for a paltry 98. This time Price took 4 for 28 and Admire Manyumwa 5 for 25. Price leads the wickets' tally with 23 from four matches.

Yeah, that's pathetic. I've written a better one:

The day 1 round up is at http://www.brmtaylor.com/news-138.html, days 2 and 3 are below:
Logan Cup round 4

To read the round-up of day 1 visit http://www.brmtaylor.com/news-138.html.

Northerns thrashed Centrals, bringing the team back down to earth. After declaring on 9/510 thanks to a brilliant 131 from Regis Chakabva and a spirited 49 from Graeme Cremer down the order, they made short work of a weak Centrals batting lineup missing the experience of Chamu Chibhabha. Not even Malcolm Waller, who has starred for his team so far this tournament, managed more than 17. Centrals were dismissed for 122. Ray Price was the star with the ball, with an average-boosting 5/6 (5 wickets for 6 runs). Elton Chigumbura, Trevor Garwe, Admire Manyumwa and Cremer each managed 1 wicket.

Following on, Centrals performed even worse the second time around. All out for 98, a score they only reached thanks to 27 from Bright Mugochi at number 9.

Again Price was outstanding, with 4/28. Admire Manyumwa was most impressive with another 5 wicket haul - 5/25. Debutante Kudzai Maunze retired hurt after an Elton Chigumbura delivery was thought to break his finger - continuing a string of injuries in the Logan Cup. Westerns star Mark Vermeulen also has a finger injury, with a fracture he sustained during a slips catch.

Northerns won by an innings and 290 runs.

The Easterns and Westerns clash is still in action. Westerns took a first innings lead of 65 runs, after a century from Mark Mabuza. Tawanda Mupariwa scored 39 while opener Freedom Takarusenga continued his good form with 33 up front, anchoring the innings for 30 overs.

In Easterns second innings, Stuart Matsikenyeri played a good innings with 142. Steven Nyamuzinga provided adequate support with 48, while Westerns would have been happy to see the back of Forster Mutizwa for just 12. The returning Sean Williams was the pick of the bowlers, with 3/60. John Nyumbu took 3/104, while strangely Freedom Takarusenga who bowled so well in the first innings was given just 4 overs by his captain. At stumps on day 3, Westerns were 0/12 chasing 212. Takarusenga is unbeaten on 7 while fellow opener Taurai Madhiri has a single run to his name.
