Yes, Vio Irvine it is, who represented the country in 4 different sports: Tennis, Hockey, Squash and Cricket (Played one match for Rhodesia). He had also played football at a lesser level.eugene wrote:Cecil Victor Irvine, what a sportsman.

I see you are familiar with that Rhodesian Sports Profiles book by Glen Byrom? It is a testament to Rhodesia how many great sportsmen such a small country produced.

Got to know about the book very recently. It is a goldmine for us non-Zimbabweans (and probably even for Zimbos) to know more about the sports personalities of the Rhodesian times...

231. Speaking of Rhodesia, a black man walking out to bat at what was then Salisbury Sports Club was probably a pretty unique sight, to say the least (ok, he hasn't got his pads on as he's fielding first). What is the story behind the photo, and who are the players seen here?

Re: Zimbabwe Cricket Photo Quiz
The photo is from 1970, when Garry Sobers played a double wicket compitition in Salisbury, where he partnered Ali Bacher. This appearence created great political turmoil in West Indian countries, and Sobers had to tender apology for playing in Rhodesia. The photograph has Sobers and Eddie Barlow.
I wasn't aware of this incident, and read it now, after you put up this question. Quite a story: http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/co ... 35653.html

Re: Zimbabwe Cricket Photo Quiz
Absolutely correct. I only discovered the story recently myself. Sobers showed some astonishing naivity by playing in Rhodesia just when the sporting boycott of South Africa had kicked in.CrimsonAvenger wrote:The photo is from 1970, when Garry Sobers played a double wicket compitition in Salisbury, where he partnered Ali Bacher.
