Guys, the Rocks aren't that bad. Northern Districts in NZ are horrible too! Their latest game in their ListA competition was very bad!
As expected they sit bottom of the List A table, but atop the FC table. Funny thing is, the opposite is true of the Rocks! As someone said, they were the List A champions not too long ago, but prop up the Logan Cup table!
Would like to see a reversal of those fortunes, but it's clear that the raw talent is there, they just don't have a competitive advantage (i.e. Ballance, Horton, some Zim internationals & top experienced local players). I doubt they'd be getting beat so much if all the side's players were evenly distributed, with no imports to speak of!
Just like NZ, we can also have a 6 team FC system. It doesn't look to me like their FC system can produce 15 seamers+spinners, 15 batsmen and 4 wicketkeepers who are better than our selection, yet they're thumping us. They can produce a better squad of 14 players, but not a better squad of 34!
Where we lag far behind them is the allrounders department! Other than that and the money aspect, we should be having similar systems!

Sadly, they probably are that bad... Since they won that competition they have lost Matsikenyeri, Craig Ervine, Raza, Chigumbura, Chinouya, Marillier. What replacements they have signed (Vermeulen, Panyangara, Muzarabani, Masvaure) haven't managed to stay fit, and are largely not as good...hhm wrote: As someone said, they were the List A champions not too long ago, but prop up the Logan Cup table!
Re: [Match Thread] Rocks Vs Tuskers (Logan Cup)
ive heard a few people now spruik the case for an academy 11....but think a bit deeper
what would that actually achieve?
a bunch of young raw teenagers playing in the logan cup.
Who would benefit from that?
You need senior leadership to help benefit these kids. Thats what brings their game up a level.
Also this initiative would contradict the whole county english import infrastructure ZC have in place. We bring them in to whip the native zimbos into shape do we not?
Of course you can get around that fact by loading the hypothetical academy 11 with imports and senior zimbos, but whats the point of that? it would be a circus and no different from a current zimbo first class team.
The solution in my opinion is:
-introduce a draft of some sort to equalise the playing pool
-cut the dead wood

Even I have got Stan Marisa out... At first class level he is an extremely average player. The fact that he can play reasonably regularly for the Rocks is a big pointer to their lack of talent and depth at the moment.

I have a mate who asked me to go for the trials for the Rocks next year but to be honest mate, things with Uni have taken preference for atleast 2 years.ZIMDOGGY wrote:another idea,

As you all know its my aim to go back and play domestically, i mean if these little english county players are doing it, why not me.
Rocks just need a few good over seas signings for next season (if they have a next season), and they should be able to bounce back..

Northern Disricts would destroy The Rocks. New Zealand still has more depth domestically than Zimbabwe. One thing I notice with Zimbabwean domestic cricket is the high turnover of players from one season to the next. Not many seem to be able to cut it for more than a season or two at the First Class level. New Zealand has many long term domestic players who perform consistently well despite not quite being of international standard.

Trust me, if your have been living in the UK for the last 10 years or so you do not want to go and live in Mavisgo, its deffo no Manchester or wherever in Lancs you live.sloandog wrote:I have a mate who asked me to go for the trials for the Rocks next year but to be honest mate, things with Uni have taken preference for atleast 2 years.ZIMDOGGY wrote:another idea,

This is the problem which is why no players are going there, if you have a choice between Bulawayo, the captial or Mavinsgo, its no contest, Zanu PF have put no funding into the smaller rural areas what so ever, though it is intresting that most of there support comes from the rural areas, one would of thought they would see a bit more of public money.

Do the internationals have to live in Masvingo to play for Rocks?
