Ireland are actually a decent side still. Does a disservice to Zimbabwe to just dismiss the Irish. They played poorly (choosing to field first when chasing teams have all struggled, misfields, etc) but they were also made to look mediocre by a very compelling Zimbabwe side. I knew Blessing and Ngarava could be a handful after watching Little and the Irish seamers get the ball to bounce. They all bowl roughly the same pace, with the ZIM guys being perhaps a yard quicker than the Irish.sloandog wrote: ↑Mon Oct 17, 2022 8:14 pmThey've regressed from what I've just seen. They've no depth in their batting what so ever. In years gone by they had the Obrians, Joyce, Porterfield etc. Not the case now at all. For me Ryan Burl needs to bat higher. Coming in at 7 so just shit for his level of ability. He's a top 4 batter but has it in his head he's a finisher
Ireland recently beat a full strength Afghanistan in a series. I believe it was a 5 match series too, so it wasn't a fluke. Ireland are a decent side, but its clear that Zimbabwe are well past them currently. 6 months ago, under Rajput, this would have been an even stevens game, and Ireland may have even been the slight favorite.

You were dismissing Ireland the whole game. you said 140 would be too far for them, but they got there.Kriterion_BD wrote: ↑Tue Oct 18, 2022 2:17 am

Under Rajput, I worry we may not have made this tournament.

140 isnt a complete dismissal given how the West Indies and Sri lanka faredzimbos_05 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 18, 2022 2:33 amYou were dismissing Ireland the whole game. you said 140 would be too far for them, but they got there.Kriterion_BD wrote: ↑Tue Oct 18, 2022 2:17 am

They played well against Bangladesh, India, and Australia but it could have just been a hot streak. This is a World Cup performance and it was clinical. Not just a 5 run or 1 wicket victory. This is most likely proof that this resurgence is real (as long as Raza keeps playing and doesn't retire).Kriterion_BD wrote: ↑Tue Oct 18, 2022 2:17 am

I mentioned the other day how disappointing it was to see how Tari’s career has gone, but I think Burl’s career (batting wise) has been almost as disappointing. For me anyways because I always said he would turn out to be better than Tari when that was a hot debate here on the forum circa 2016-2018.
Apart from a few eye catching t20 innings where he’s slogged the spinners, he’s averaging low 20s in ODI cricket & is now pretty much a t20 slogger player who exclusively bats at 7 or 8. The other issue is that he can’t slog the pace bowlers, so he’s not really a proper late order hitter.
I agree with Sloan, he’s more suited to the middle order 3-5, but he needs to work on his game and focus on being the ‘anchor’ type batsman Zimbabwe will need when Ervine, Williams & Raza retire.

Burl batted at 4 for all of the last domestic season and did poorly. Averaged 18.25 from eight Logan Cup innings, and 16.00 from eight pro50 innings.
From his interviews he seems to genuinely fancy himself as more of a bowler nowadays, but when your captain doesn't throw the ball to you even on a turning pitch that is questionable too.

Let's not forget Jongwe's Cameo there at the end with the bat

He bowled well but not sure that’s how I’d describe it personally.
He still looks a little unfit by his old standard and his pace was only low 120’s.
He was just accurate and got some nip and Ireland werent good enough.

Burl is a failed bat as a batsman. He doesn’t have the temperament. He’s a tail ender with technique. He’s a bigger hitting Cremer.
