We are playing S.A on Sunday and below is my stating 11

1. Hamilton Masakadza
2. Mark Vermulen – give him a chance on a faster track
3. Brendon Taylor
4. Tatenda Taibu
5. Charles Coventry
6. Stewart Matsikenyeri – Sean Williams if fit
7. Elton Chigumbura
8. Graham Creamer / Utseya if fit
9. Ray Price
10. Kyle Jarvis
11. Chris Mpofu

12. Tymcen Maruma
13. Vusi Sibanda
14. Foster Mutizwa
15. Edward Rainsford

Experience does count and we can’t afford to take any risk against S.A. We have to play 2 specialist pace bowlers upfront because the last game (S.A v England) produced 15wkts, 12 of them from pace bowlers and 3 came from spinners. The total runs scored in that game was 624 so if it is the same pitch then we have to score Big otherwise we will be torn apart.

The frightening facts
• Everyone is a threat in the S.A team they just need one player to perform and they can easily beat us any day but my biggest worry is Wayne Pannel whom we haven’t played against and given the fact that he is a left arm fast bowler Zim might just struggle. I think you all remember Nuwan Zoysa and Chaminda Vaas the Sri Lankans, Syed Rasel Bangladesh how they ripped through our bating order.

• The last time we toured S.A lost by 5 wkts, 165runs and 113 runs

Positives
Our guys played against most people in the team before including Albie Morkel, Kallis, Smith, Duminy, AB and Steyn.

Dale Steyn
We played one game against him at Harare Sports club and he had these figure
10ov 3wkts for 65 runs

12.2 Steyn to Masakadza,FOUR, that is a touch full and is well driven through the off side, that brings some excitement to a smallish crowd
12.3 Steyn to Masakadza, FOUR, outside off, again away swing, full, drives, outside half of the bat, and a slip-up from Gibbs as the bounce beats him at backward point
14.4 Steyn to Masakadza, FOUR, and after a great ball, sends down a half tracker, width, crashed over gully from the back foot, shot!! as he intentionally goes over the slip/gully area
18.5 Steyn to Taibu, SIX, follows the good ball up with a short ball, well outside off, and that is cut firmly out of the middle, over the gully, over the third man and over the boundary
20.4 Steyn to Taibu, SIX, short ball, pulls very well and high, Bosman at deep midwicket, runs to get under it, does not see himself crossing the boundary ropes and dives straight into the hoardings, that looked very bad, the hoarding of course made from metal
20.5 Steyn to Taibu, SIX, short again and Taibu says thank you I will repeat the shot, sends that over the boundary at wide midwicket with Bosman now on the stretcher and being taken away
39.3 Steyn to Matsikenyeri, FOUR, too much width, sweeper is very square and has no time to cut the crashing drive off

• S.A will definitely bow at least 25 overs of pace so the likes of Hamilton, Coventry who likes the ball coming on to the bat will fancy themselves in with a chance.

• The pitches will not be as slow as the ones in Bangladesh.

Hmmmm... games against S.A have always been exciting because the playing conditions are almost the same with playing at home. Lets hope the boys are up for the task. Remember we pulled one over Australia in S.A. even though that was a T20i.

...and hopefully not with something like "Zimbabwe Slump to 15 All Out".

I really shouldn't even joke about that, either...

 Not at all.

I was damn busy past 4 days in a medical education workshop. In the 4th ODI i managed to check my mobile for the score and was very happy to see Bangladesh 45/4. All my joy evaporated when my friends teased me in the evening by sending congrats sms. Then i shockingly realised that it was the 2nd inn and Zim had slumped to huge ignomiousity.

Similarly in the last ODI i only managed to saw the last ball on cricinfo mobicast which said -Bangla win by 1 wkt.  Taylor's century went in vain that day and few hours later Tendulkar's 175 too went in vain. Thoough he is the ideal one to reach 200, thanks a ton the record is intact for Coventry :D

Coming back to this series...i think we should forget about Bangladesh series.Utseyalitharan has written a fabulous review and i agree that on fast pitches Covy, Vermulen all will come good. SAF is indeed a very tough nut to crack but i am sure the fight will be much better than against Asian minnows
GO ZIM GO

Agreed! I would look forward to a couple of strong shows with the bat here, and "The Beast" (as Train Driver puts it) in particular would love the ball coming on to the bat. Looking forward to seeing him getting back to run feast form. :)

NEWS FROM SA
Wayne Panel won’t be playing on Sunday and on Tuesday due to injury, Tsotsobe will be the favorite to take his place while Charl Langavelt has an outside chance of filling his spot. The good news is that Tsotsobe is not as experienced as Panel at international level and he bows medium pacers the only game he played he bowed 9 overs got 4 wkts at a cost of 50 runs. The bad news is that he is trying to get a place in the starting 11 and he is left armed. They are likely to field a strong team on Sunday and then rest the other lot for the Tuesday game. Kallis will be opening the batting in the absence of Gibbs who has been dropped.

S.A team
Hashim Amla, Johan Botha, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Jacques Kallis, Charl Langeveldt, Ryan McLaren Albie Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Alviro Petersen, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Roelof van der Merwe Alviro Petersen

This is the most likely SA squad for Sunday
1. Graeme Smith
2. Jacques Kallis
3. AB de Villiers
4. Jean-Paul Duminy
5. Alviro Petersen
6. Mark Boucher
7. Albie Morkel
8. Johan Botha
9. Roelof van der Merwe
10. Dale Steyn
11. Lonwabo Tsotsobe

Start time 10.00am (8.00GMT)

Big picture

After South Africa's early-season flop in the ICC Champions Trophy, a short two-match series against Zimbabwe gives them a chance to warm-up before facing England in the main event of their summer. Although the home side are missing a few big names - Jacques Kallis, JP Duminy and Wayne Parnell are recovering from injuries - the opposition shouldn't provide too many problems, but the contest will provide a useful experience before tougher challenges.

The Champions Trophy failure was another blot for the team at global events, but South Africa still have an impressive one-day pedigree. They will take the opportunity to look at a few of their fringe players against Zimbabwe and strong performances could lead to more rewards down the line. The experienced pair of Herschelle Gibbs and Makhaya Ntini have both been dropped as the selectors begin to plan for the future.

It was the bowling and middle-order hitting that caused concerns during the Champions Trophy. There is pressure on Albie Morkel to live up the hype over his striking power and provide more success with the ball.

Zimbabwe enter this series after a 4-1 defeat in Bangladesh which included a dismal collapse to 44 all out. Their game is slowly starting to find its feet after a hugely troubled period, but for each step forward there are likely to be plenty backwards in the short term. Making South Africa work for victory would be counted as a success in this match

Team news

South Africa have announced their line-up a day ahead of the match with Ryan McLaren named for his international debut following the end of his Kolpak time in county cricket. There are also recalls for the hard-hitting Alvrio Petersen, swing bowler Charl Langeveldt and left-arm quick Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

South Africa 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 AB de Villiers, 4 Mark Boucher (wk), 5 Alvrio Petersen, 6 Albie Morkel, 7 Ryan McLaren, 8 Johan Botha, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Lonwabo Tsotsobe, 11 Charl Langeveldt.

Captain Prosper Utseya injured his ankle in Bangladesh and Zimbabwe missed his bowling skill so his fitness will be closely monitored. Zimbabwe are likely to need more pace options than they used in Bangladesh which could mean a recall for Kyle Jarvis who has made a promising start to his career.

Zimbabwe: (possible) 1 Mark Vermeulen, 2 Hamilton Masakadza (capt), 3 Brendan Taylor (wk), 4 Elton Chigumbura, 5 Malcolm Waller, 6 Stuart Matsikenyeri, 7 Chamu Chibhabha, 8 Ray Price, 9 Graeme Cremer, 10 Kyle Jarvis 11 Chris Mpofu.

Watch out for...

Ryan McLaren has waited a long time for his international chance. It almost came last year, but he had to withdraw from the squad to face Kenya and Bangladesh because of his Kolpak status with Kent in England. Now he has left that behind and given South Africa another crack. McLaren became eligible on October 1 and the selectors have wasted little time drafting him in. He gives the ball a strong thump and came to the fore during the recent Champions League when two late boundaries forced a tie for the Eagles against Sussex after which the Eagles won the one-over eliminator. His wicket-to-wicket bowling has also proved effective in Twenty20 and he claimed a hat-trick at the 2007 Finals Day at Edgbaston.

Zimbabwe didn't have a particularly happy time in Bangladesh, but Brendan Taylor ended the series in fine style with an unbeaten 118 off 125 balls - his maiden ODI hundred. He is a key part of the top order as it develops for the future and a possible return to Test level. Taylor is capable of dominating attacks and is also important in balancing the side with his role as wicketkeeper.

Stats and trivia

South Africa have an overwhelming 24-2 advantage in head-to-head matches against Zimbabwe.

The last time the sides met was for a three-match series in Zimbabwe in 2007, when the visitors eased to a 3-0 victory.

Quotes

"It is a dream come true. It has been a long process to get there and I am really looking forward to this opportunity. It is lovely to be part of the team and I hope to contribute in as many areas as possible."
