One of the few players whom I watched playing in cricket stadium. It was the series against India in 2000 I suppose and in 3rd ODI, Campbell came out opening with a new batsman. The media house in Green Park stadium had no clue who he was when I said, Its Baby Chingokes. That was also my first ever visit to a cricket match.

I played against Trevor, he was THE dude at the time I was in grade 6 and he was in Form two at the Casuals cricket festival. he really was good, though at that time there was a better player in my opinion called Barnabas Masawi from Church. Trev won the best batsmen a nd Barny won the best all rounder.

I remember watching Madondo's innings against New Zealand. He certainly had some talent.

Great write up. We don't really see many articles as detailed as this with multiple viewpoints about a Zim Cricketer. He certainly was good, but not sure if he would have been as good as a Taibu or a Hamilton. At worst, he certainly would have been right behind them.

My memory of Trevor was seeing him as the first black opener and pure batsman was proud but also frustrated and at that time it never clicked that it was significant development for black cricket in Zimbabwe. But as i have grown and been within Zim cricket circles i realize that Trevor had a Jekyll and Hyde character to some a hard but fun loving cricketer to others the dude who pissed in a drink cooler and watched his white team mates drink it . When compared to contemporaries like Tiba or Hammy he wont be as revered as he came up through the traditional white system being at the famed Marandela and Falcon schools and cutting his club teeth at traditional white Clubs OH and OM's(wonder if its still alive) and not respected by the so called advocates of the black cricket nation. In terms of skills i think the fact that he hadn't converted his starts into first class hundreds or 50's is telling as to his talent and makes it dificult for me to place him as a top ranked black batsman.All in all one of the best balanced articles in Zimbabwe

Watermelon here, I was reminded of Trevor Mandondo today and found this thread after some searching. My thoughts are that Madondo was an ordinary player who would be remembered as an afterthought like Prince Masvaure, or similar to other quota players of his ilk. Death ended up being his best career move in cementing his legacy.
