BT & KJ return summary

It's almost been a year since the return of two of Zimbabwe's biggest stars Brendan Taylor and Kyle Jarvis, they were brought back to secure World Cup Qualification and despite getting close we all know how the story ended. I thought now would be a good time to reflect on the past year and see if the guys have lived up to expectation.
Brendan Taylor
Tests: 3
Runs: 101
Avg: 16.83
50/100: 1/0
H.S: 73 v Windies
Disappointing so far in his Test match returns although looking at his career he's a better ODI player with most of his Test runs coming at home v BD. I think we expected more in the home series v Windies but apart from the 73 in the 2nd dig of the first Test he struggled. Getting out twice playing reverse sweeps in his 3 Tests is disappointing.
Highlight: His 73 v Windies
Rating: 3/10
ODIs: 18
Runs: 743
Avg: 41.27
50/100: 2/2
H.S: 138 v Windies
He was brought back mainly for the ODI format and he didn't disappoint averaging over 40 and scoring two tons (3 if you count the Nepal 100) maybe a bit disappointing that he only passed the half century mark 4 times from 18 digs, he got out after making starts in quite a few games. But overall very good returns the highlight being the 138 v the Windies although it didn't lead to a World Cup securing victory it was a top knock against a good attack, his keeping was also tidy. Will be disappointed he didn't play the match winning innings Zimbabwe needed against the UAE.
Highlight: His 138 v Windies
Rating: 8/10
T20's: 4
Runs: 66
Avg: 24.00
S/R: 82.75
H.S: 29 v South Africa
Not much to write home about here only the 4 games with little returns, his strike rate is concerning though probably due to having to stabilise the innings. Expect more from BT in this format if Zimbabwe get a longer run of t20 matches.

Kyle Jarvis
Tests: 2
Wickets: 6
Avg: 27.16
S/R: 56.0
Eco: 2.91
BBI: 3/57 v South Africa
In his strongest format KJ did pretty good in the 2 Tests he played taking 6 wickets from 3 innings bowled. Toiled well on a deck not offering much v the Windies at Bulawayo, whilst he was dangerous in the pink ball Test getting Elgar, Markram and Bavuma out. Hard to really judge from just two games but it's clear the longer format still suits KJ most.
Highlight: 3/57 v South Africa
Rating: 7/10
ODIs: 13
Wickets: 13
Avg: 36.61
S/R: 44.2
Eco: 4.96
BB: 3/46 v Bangladesh
Pretty disappointing returns in the ODI format for KJ, despite never really looking comfortable in the 50 over game he was brought back mainly to help qualification to the WC where Zimbabwe failed. When Streak and Taibu got him back I think they were hoping for more than 13 wickets from as many games, he did bowl well at times but still bowls too many boundary deliveries. Probably bowled better than his figures suggest and his economy wasn't too bad considering he bowls up front and at the death.
Highlight: 2/26 v South Africa
Rating: 4/10
T20s: 5
Wickets: 7
Avg: 17.28
S/R: 13.4
Eco: 7.72
BB: 3/37 v South Africa
Pretty good returns for KJ in the shortest format from his limited opportunities but like BT he'll aim for more success if Zimbabwe get a longer run of matches building up to the next T20 WCQ.
Highlight: 3/37 v South Africa
Rating: 6/10
In my opinion BT definitely did his job in the ODI format and you couldn't really blame him for the failed campaign, as I said the match against the UAE will hurt him because as the premier batsman he really should have played the match winning innings against a side like the UAE, but without his runs in the previous matches Zimbabwe wouldn't have gotten so close. Needs to score some runs on the Bangladesh tour in both formats, as pointed out by hhm his overseas record isn't great.
Jarvis is a fail for me considering he was brought back mainly for the ODIs and qualifying. 13 wickets from 13 games just isn't enough from your strike bowler as he was out bowled by Chatara and Blessing, the fact he got dropped also showed that he wasn't up to scratch. Who knows maybe a better showing by KJ might have been the difference in those last two close games we lost to the Windies and UAE?
