POINTS - Permutations

Post by brmtaylor.com admin »

A separate thread to discuss the different points/NRR permutations in the Super Six.

Obviously, if we win all our games we qualify. But if we start dropping games, then the points will come into play so this topic is to track which results we need to go our way and how it affects the points table and NRR.

We just have to beat Oman on Thursday and then we can work out all the different scenarios. A win on Thursday will result in a few different paths for qualification being available.

A big factor in a favour is that we are the hosts, teams like Oman and Scotland may run out of steam as they get into the 4th week of being in the country. Oman have lost their last two games and basically surprised an undercooked Irish side in the first game.

If I have done my calculations right all we need to do is win 3 games and we go to the world cup

If we win all of the world cup games to they will give us a shiny cup 8-)

Some simple and realistic scenarios are:

1) Zimbabwe win all three games - Simplest way to make it.

2) Zimbabwe win against Oman and Scotland - Will go through easily, unless Netherlands win all their 3 games, SL lose to WI and we get a 3 way tie at 8 points, here also Zimbabwe will go through because Net v WI was a tie and Zim will have higher wins.

3) Zimbabwe only win against Oman - Qualification becomes very difficult but it is still possible if SL win all their games and Scotland lose to West Indies... Then we will have Zim and Scots at 6 points each and it will go down to NRR. Zim can also go through it SL win all their games and Netherlands beat Scotland. In case of a tie with Netherlands on 6 points, Zimbabwe will directly go through on the basis of more wins (Netherlands v West Indies game will count as a Tie)

So one thing that is important for us is for SL to keep winning.

A big win over Oman will almost get things sorted.

What is impressive though is that the team have an attitude right now of proceeding undefeated. They weren't cagey with the USA. They aren't fussing with calculations. They're just attacking each game and expecting to win. That's how the big boys get through tournaments.

Sri Lanka to beat WI & NED

WI to beat Scotland & Oman

Zim to beat Oman & one of SL or Scotland

There are many scenarios, but ultimately the teams destiny is in their own hands, now we know how this ended up last time around but it feels different this time.

A big win over Oman is the first step.

I'm going to play devils advocate here and say,

We drew with Scotland in Bulawayo last time around. Scotland were also robbed against WI last time around. Scotland will want to settle some scores. We are in Bulawayo for all 3 of our games, one of which is against Scotland. The possible deciding game. Our last game of the Super Six. Last time around, it came down to our last game of the Super Six.

Yeah let's just focus on 1 game at a time. All 3 teams we are playing are used to the Bulawayo conditions by now. We also already beat Oman and Scotland in the warm ups. Scotland was a one sided victory. Anything is possible. Let's just focus on ourselves.
