Shona/Ndebele and other player names
After discussing the not so African origin of the name Cephas, I was wondering if someone could provide us with translations for some Shona/Ndebele names. I've just discovered this site: http://zimnames.com/?start=20&search=
Chamunorwa -- What are you fighting for? (A place in the side for the upcoming tour, obviously)
Kudakwashe (Samunderu) -- God's will
Kudzai (Sauramba, Maunze, Taibu) -- Respect
Mbekezeli (Mabuza) -- The patient one
Mpumelelo (Mbangwa) -- Success
(T.) Munyaradzi -- Comforter
Natsai -- Make good
Ngonidzashe (Mahwire) -- God's mercy
Njabulo -- Joy
Shingirai -- Be courageous
Simbarashe (Gupo) - Power of God
Tafadzwa (Kamungozi ...) -- We are pleased
Tapiwa (Mufudza) -- We have been given
Tatenda -- We are thankful
Taurai (Muzarabani) -- Speak
Tendai -- Be thankful
Tinashe -- We are with the Lord
Tinotenda -- We are grateful
Vusimuzi -- Home/Clan starter = first born boy
... and now for family names ...
Feel free to add or correct.

Re: Shona/Ndebele player names
I think Shingirai is Courage rather than strength - Simba is strength or power. But I may be wrong.

Re: Shona/Ndebele player names
I wasn't sure about that one. You are right about Simba. The website I used only had a female version of the name, Shingai, translated as 'Perseverance'. Elsewhere Shingirayi is translated as 'be strong'. 'Courage' or 'brave' are certainly not far off. I think -shinga (as in Takashinga) means 'brave'.Jemisi wrote:I think Shingirai is Courage rather than strength - Simba is strength or power. But I may be wrong.
To me Shingi is both, strong and courageous.

With a name like that, Vusi was destined to be an opener.

Re: Shona/Ndebele player names
jemisi is right, shingirai means 'be courageous'. 'Simba' is strength . Good thread ,by the way

Some people do. Just ignore it, mate if it doesn't comply with your general mood!ZIMDOGGY wrote:who cares?

The topic is about Zim cricketers and their names, so where's your problem?
Some of the English player names are just as interesting in their etymology/origin. There's scope for some interesting nicknames there. I'll come back to that later.

Can someone shed a light on surnames/family names?
Masakadza- from "kusakadza" which means "to destroy". So Masakadza probably means "you have destroyed" or something along those lines.
Maruma- from "kuruma" a verb which means "to bite". So "maruma" literally translates to "you have bitten"
Hondo(Douglas)- war.
Watambwa- means you have been played or tricked. I could be wrong here, but I'm 95% certain.
Madondo(Trevor)- "dondo" means bush so madondo is the plural form. Madondo=bushes.
Garwe (Trevor)- means crocodile.
Chigumbura- this is a tough one. "Kugumbura" means "to p*ss someone off", so I'm guessing it means "p*ss them off". I'm not so sure on this one someone will have to help me out here.
Matambanadzo(Everton)- "kutamba" means "to play" so matambanadzo means "you(plural you) have played with...(an unspecified object)"
More to follow...
Vusi, Mawoyo, H.Masakadza, Taylor, Ervine, Williams, Mutumbami, S.Masakadza, Meth, Price, Jarvis
