I think the Americans and the French would probably make better bats than Mozambique or Lesotho. And they'd have fancy stickers too + vasoline stealth to evade UltraEdge when Raz Dawg takes an ill-advised review for caught behind against Ishan Kishan when he's batting on 195* off just 46 legal deliveries. No spike detected but wouldn't have mattered since Madande is liable to have dropped the sitter anyways.Pat_Bee wrote: ↑Tue Nov 12, 2024 5:00 pmKriterion_BD wrote: ↑Tue Nov 12, 2024 3:55 pmImagine a Test match between Zimbabwe and India, that India won. But India were given free 10 pound titanium coated bats by Gunn and Moore, whilst Zimbabwe were only allowed to bat with wooden spatulas. You'd expect India to win by 100 runs or so.
That’s far off the mark, it was a Rhodesian side and a first class match. The ICC, UN or whoever put a cricketing equipment embargo on Rhodesia so they couldn’t import Gunn and Moore titanium bats. Neighbouring countries of shared philosophy and culture like Portuguese Mozambique and South Africa busted the embargo and provided D&P titanium bats without stickers and if Salisbury Sports Club was unplayable for whatever reason, they would have said you can come and play on our ground while your own is sorted.

The Arab armies were actually quite well resourced in the 1950s-1980s - they had big USSR support. It was no small feat that the nascent Jewish state fended of the Arabs seeking to expand their ill gotten gains from 7th century Arab conquests.

Soviet tech was always far inferior to western tech, be it American, British, or French. That was the case in the 1940s and its the case in the 2020s as well. Why else would Russia be struggling against tiny Ukraine, despite being at least one order of magnitude larger in every respect?
The whole world flies Boeing and Airbus aircraft. No one flies Ilyushin. Its been 50 years since the Americans set foot on the moon but the Russians haven't even attempted it. Since that time, the Chinese and Indians have sent unmanned probes to the moon.
The AK-47 is popular, only because its cheap. It doesn't hold up to an M-16 or probably even an AR-15.
Everyone has heard of Rolex...can you even name a single Russian watchmaker? And watches are relatively low tech.
The only thing the Russians have that is world class is the S400 missile defense system, but that is largely untested against US weaponry as far as I know. At the same time, its probably still inferior to the Patriot system.

An M16 or Armalite chambered in 5.56mm would graze your ear at 150 yards and let you live another day in a presidential race. An AK47 chambered in 7.62mm would lay you out cold on the podium.
Cheap, cheerful and low maintenance is what you want from a weapon when you’re at the sharp end.
Where the AK47 fails is ill disciplined operators emptying magazines on automatic from the hip. Spectacularly frightening suppressive fire but not very effective. Aimed single shots from the shoulder and the AK has far more stopping power at a far greater range.

Vostok make Russian watches and it’s not exactly low tech engineering something that beats six times a second or 21600 times a day and is accurate to +/- 30 seconds a day; which is about the industry standard at that level. Rolex is obviously medium high tier and is accurate to -4 / +6 seconds a day.

If Russian tech, ability to innovate, and ingenuity was so good they wouldn't have lost the cold war so meekly. Another way of putting it, if a communist planned economy was capable of producing such economic/technological gems as you guys are suggesting, it would put a big ass nail into the argument that free markets are hands down superior. Its an established law of of the universe that the level of innovation achievable with free market open competition cannot be surpassed by anything that we know of to date.

Soviet tech is inferior, but the Arab armies that invaded Israel weren't stone throwing teenagers, they were well trained and well armed and had the advantage of attacking from all sides.

He lost all credibility when he suggested the AK47 was inferior to an M16 or Armalite
Previous employment gives me extensive knowledge and experience in this field you can believe me that the AK47 has certain attributes you won’t read about on Wikipedia articles that make it better than the M16 or Armalite in some applications and in the Israeli/Arab disagreements its sloppy engineering tolerances could definitely work to its advantage. As I said in a previous post, it’s the operator, not the rifle itself that determines how effective a weapon system it is.

You're 1 of 3 there...only accurate descrpition is the multi sided nature of the conflict. And you forgot the advantage of being a wealthy country getting free weapons systems...thats a game changer. Imagine how good a full member cricket nation could be if it didn't have to divert money to a women's side...
If the Arab armies were so well equipped, they wouldn't have been replaced by non-state actors over the last 50 years.
