Then Sri Lanka cop some heat for refusing to shake hands after the game. That's also an interesting one.

It's elite sport, handshaking is a choice. Is the argument that Sri Lanka weren't playing according to the spirit of the game?

At the end of the day, Umpires have to uphold the rule, especially if the captain appeals.

Spirit of the game will always be brought up, and it's not something that will go away. It's because of those years of tough sledging that it has become more of a thing. Some of the games I umpire in grade cricket, I sometimes think certain players are pushing the line with their sledging, but at the end of the day, the players tend to not get angry or frustrated, so I think Aussies just expect it.

If the safety of it is so critical and life affirming as you state then here’s an idea; he should have checked his equipment before he went out to the middle?

Also you are ignoring the point that the match referee has released a statement saying Matthew’s took more than two minutes to get to the middle BEFORE he even realised his helmet had an issue.

And yeah, it’s a World Cup, the absolute pinnacle of your life’s work - why can’t they treat it as war? I say you need to toughen up a bit. This is elite professional sport and there is a lot on the line.
I was not there, nor the footage I've seen provides undisputable evidence.
I thus can't entirely vouch for Angelo when, during press conference, he stated:
- I was on the crease before 2 minutes
- only on the crease, when pulling the strap, I found it malfunctioning

If Angelo is in good faith your case is moot

If Angelo is in bad faith I once again repeat my opinion:

- the umpires have applied a rule
- the ICC rule sucks: in the zillions of playing conditions they forgot to state clearly that in no conditions anyone should be "forced" to face a bowler without a properly fit helmet

A cricket WC is (or is not) to be approached as a war with all intrinsec "bad" doing?
90% of players bear witness they completely disagree with Shakib, not only in WC but aolng their entire career.
Let's be crystal clear: sledging, mankading, timing out, etc. have been (at least so far) the exception appllicable to a minority of players.
The vast majority of cricket professionals play in a decent way.

No other sport at the elite level has this tedious ‘spirit of the game’ ‘gentleman’s game’ bollocks. Toughen up.

What’s wrong with trying to win at all costs, within the laws of the game?

Let’s be clear - Matthews broke a rule and Shakib did not. Only in cricket would people try to make Shakib the bad guy there

Decent start by Afghanistan. Got a feeling the will be a close game if they get maybe 270-280. Its going to be death by spin for Australia.

If a batsman gets an inside edge, has no reviews left, and is given out, then after seeing on big screen I'm expecting fielding team captain to withdraw appeal and bring back the batter.

Spirit of game right, you have seen with your eyes that batsman had an inside edge, how can you not call him back?

You can't pick and choose when you want to show spirit of cricket. Do it all the time if you advocate for it.

Absolutely true: only in cricket there are also other parameteres which are totally absent in other sports.
In soccer Shakib would be an icon, in cricket a little more than a villain.

This doesn't necessarily mean that cricket has to learn from the behaviour of footballers.

So far the (anacronistic?) spirit of the game has been truly effective in making possible that the game is still played by a vast majority of gentlemen plus a few opportunists.
In the future "spirit of the game" can be ditched and we can enjoy brawls, umpire intimidations, players feigning injuries, etc. Look at soccer matches: possibilities are endless.
