Hamilton was superb once again - he needs to carry this form over to the red colours.

Elton and Jarvis protected from the consequences of poor bowling after just one over, prompting the captain to turn to the entire team bar himself and the wicketkeeper! They made Tino look competent in this format! Jarvis would be justofied in feeling agrieved as two catches off his bowling were grassed, but at the same time he should gone for far more. His direct hit to run out of Mustard from behind the non-striker's stumps, is probably only thing which will turn out to have earned the Eagles their first win!

What continues to boggle me is why Shingi continues to be put up the order head of Utseya!

Nathan Waller bowled well, but truth be told those batsmen gave away their wickets. Nonetheless he is one to look out for. Kasuza continues to look good over a brief knock.

Matsi once again looked superb. Similar to a lot that was often said about Vusi. The difference is Vusi is now able to look good for longer. Shingi's ball wasn't there to cut, neither was it good enough to bowl him, but he couldn't resist to play according to his strength when it was not fitting!

Elton is turning into Hamilton at his worst, while Hamilton is turning into Elton at his best with bat!

Will Nathan Waller grab the game by the scruff of it's neck............

looks like rain might pip him to it!

Thought Mushangwe was very impressive especially when he found the right length.

Was out all day, so missed all the action, but it's great to see Hammie score a few again. I hope it sets his mind at ease before the NZ tour. Vitori back in action also bodes well.

got quite excited about Vitori this morning ... nearly late for an important meeting (ie an u12 football match)...looking at the scorecard Jarvis was expensive again. It's a shame that this format is where the money is so he's unlikely to be protected from it - or want to be...

I was fortunate 3 days in a row to watch the games. Dont know if I ever will be able to repeat this.
Once again there were several things to take note of from yesterdays matchups.

Tuskers Vs Rocks
Cricinfo originally said this was the second game of the day, but when I tuned in I was surprised to see Meth on my screen. Was he on fire yesterday.

Meth: He keeps improving by the day. When I first saw him against NZ he bowled all the deliveries that eventually targeted the stumps. Some of them did not even pitch. This made it somewhat easy for the batsmen to plonk their front foot and guess at the line. This is the natural reaction when batsmen dont know which way it is gonna swing.

Yesterday he considerably shortened his length bowling at a good length or thereabouts that added an extra dimension to his bowling. Some deliveries sliced through waist high and some zeroed in on the stumps. This is a significant improvement and will almost make him lethal. Almost.... b'coz he still needs to take it to the next level and add a short ball to his skill set. I favor the short ball than the yorker because given his bowling that is the last type of ball the batsman would expect and 9 out of 10 times they wont be ready for it.

I have seen Meth bat only once and that is good enough for me to conclude he has some potential there although I am not impressed by the Tuskers depriving the local boys of valuable big-match experience.

NCube: Certainly is jostling for a t20/odi bowling spot and the batsmen never seem to line him up, although his real test will be against an international side.

Dabengwa: Came crashing down to earth yesterday. As a left arm spinner he will have good and bad days although his overall t20 economy rate is impressive. Once again I would have liked to see him bat. Will the tuskers experiment in the last game so these guys including ervine can have a bat?

Rocks batting: Nothing that caught my eye except they did well to put 100+ on the board.

Tuskers Innings: So boring, nothing to write home about. Tom smith finally found some form although he had his chances.

Vitori: He proved his critics wrong should I say. As the commentators mentioned he has all but booked his seat on the plane to Auckland. Once again he has shown enough to get the national call and will have to perform against McCullum and Guptill, which he might if he bowled like he did yesterday. Was very fired up which is good to watch.

And that man Gayle just walked after he nicked it. I dont think the ump will ever give him out just because he is Chris Gayle.

Mountianeers Vs Eagles
This was a classic matchup between teams that were evenly matched. If not for the rain it would have been even more entertaining. One could never say how much Mustard, Rory Brown or Trego were gonna do before the match began.

Mountaineers innings
Tino: This man has such a cool head and did not allow his reputation as a test match player affect his shot making. He just watched the ball as closely as it can be watched and pounced on it at the last minute. He was looking to play shots and rotate the strike. Thoroughly deserves his place in the test line up because of his mindset alone.

Kasuza: I had written highly of him in one of my previous posts and I think Conant had asked me if I could have judged him after seeing him for all but 5 deliveries. Like I said it was snap judgement based on what I had seen at the time. I did not reply to the post and wanted to have another close look at him before I gave you a reply.

What struck me the first time about his game, he was checking all the right boxes in my requirements for batting list. He is so quick to judge the length of the ball which is there for everyone to see and he has so much time to play the spinners and does not know what to do with it.
Plays the ball right under his nose without reaching out, he starts out his stance with the vertical bat position and reacts with the correct shot instead of premeditating it or consciously bringing the bat down from a horizontal position and poking at it. Bats with a still head and everything looks so fluid and he was trying to minimize the risk but playing the spinners to square leg. He got out on both occasions because he was in two minds and he is not presenting a straight enough bat to the spinners with the scoreboard pressure mounting on him to work the singles. I would work on his balance when playing the spinners.

I think he has been a victim of the match situation so far and he certainly needs to work out a thing or two against the spinners. If he cuts out the aerial shots and looks to play down the ground he will be unstoppable really. That is what he needs to work on.

I have not seen him bat the seamers yet but his technique will serve him well. He can be devastating in the powerplays given his fluid technique.

My views were only reinforced yesterday after Neil Manthorp also asked the question as to whether he is ready for international cricket. He was asking if he was good enough he was old enough. Just the fact that he brought this up justifies my initial assessment. So it is not just hype they are looking at him as a future prospect. No one is quite sure how far out in the future that will be. I think may he is a couple of FC hundreds away.

I think he is as good technically as the other Zim international batsmen(sometimes superior) and in my view he is a batsman for all formats, more so in the test format given how much time he as to play the ball and the t20 given his bat speed.

He just needs to develop a proper match temperament because he has more than enough skill I think.
He will be the first name on the A team for now and he should be given his debut in the next home series just to boost his confidence or taken as an intern to NZ just as an investment for the future.
Let me tell you he is not going to look out of place at all when he does get that chance.

He needs a bat sponsor or change of bat. I would go with Gary-Nicolls or SS.

Shingi:
Needs work on his batting before making any claims to national selection.

Jarvis:
After seeing him yesterday I feel for him. Looks like he is holding back a bit of pace because of his back problem and that can be critical factor in delivering his skill. This kid seems to be so committed to Zim Cricket along with his dad to guide him along. He still got that back brace on and I would keep him as part of the Zim squad at all times because it looks like he has got the fire that can only make him improve.
His t20 place certainly has be under threat given the strength of the competition from Meth ( who outbowled everyone in this tournament including Nannes and Tait), Vitori and NCube (who has done his reputation no harm) and to a lesser extent Mpofu (the tuskers dont seem to be missing him at all and who does not give initial breakthroughs and like Meth mentioned during his interview yesterday the best way to contain is by taking wickets, perhaps there is a message there for the selectors  ).
Jarvis needs to work on that yorker to be more effective.

All in all I am happy with the level of competition and hope the selectors invest opportunity in these guys instead of Chakabva, Chibhabha etc who have had their chance and perhaps need more work on their game.
