Yes, indeed. Very well spotted, skipper!brmtaylor.com admin wrote:Is it a photo from the 1975 Eric Ellerine XI tour of Rhodesia? Don Wilson is the prominent player mentioned.
In 1975 the first representative black touring side for nearly two decades left South Africa under the auspices of the South African African Cricket Board (SAACB), sponsored by the businessman Eric Ellerine and coached by the Yorkshire pro and England test cricketer Don Wilson. They played four matches in all against a Country Districts XI, Midlands, Manicaland, and a Presidents XI at the Police Ground.
The photo was taken during the one-day fixture between the SAACB IX and Manicaland on March 6 1975, the white gentleman in the cap is the Manicland captain Mike Griffith, a player I don't know anything else about. Scores: SAACB XI 82 all out, Manicaland 134-8 decl., SAACB XI 91-5.
This photo, as indeed the one of Chingoka bowling, is taken from the highly interesting The Story of an African Game (2003) by André Odendaal, currently serving as Chief Excecutive for Western Province.
