Thanks, takleg.

Will we see 'The Courageous Destroyer' open the bowling alongside "The Spear" in the Tests against Pakistan?

The latter being Kyle (Scottish for 'a narrow strait') Jarvis (from French/Germanic Gervais, Ger = spear). I hope he keeps them in a narrow channel outside off, and does not spear 'em down the leg-side. ;)

Indeed.

Our skipper is also due a return to form so that he can rightly claim the title 'Prince of Zim batting'. Against India and in the Carribean he rather played like a "Prince of Scottish Tailors" (Brendan is Gaelic for 'prince', Ross and Murray both localities in Scotland).

And now that Raymond 'The Protector' (of the oppostion's run rate) Price is retired we need him to live up to the second meaning of his first name: 'The Counsellor', to guide our younger crop of spinners. Will the 'Merchant of Lincolnshire' (Graeme is derived from Grantham in Lincolshire, Cremer is German for a small merchant) finally turn into 'The Spin Merchant'?

this should be in the general forum btw.
Some people do. Just ignore it, mate if it doesn't comply with your general mood!

The topic is about Zim cricketers and their names, so where's your problem?

Some of the English player names are just as interesting in their etymology/origin. There's scope for some interesting nicknames there. I'll come back to that later.
He is a racist, what do you think? You can be certain had there be an English equivalent of the topic, he would have happily started the thread himself!!

I can think up of a few totally irrelevant threads started by himself here!! Your bitterness is shining through, zimdoggy!!

But back to the thread, am just mighty relieved nobody here is called TenDucks or something similar. You couldn't put it past a Zimbo, though very nearly in the next ten years you may meet a quaintly named Walking Wicket Mpofu, given Brendan Taylor's dismal form

I have to admit that I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to the etymology of words, names and places, primarily in my own language but English and Shona are prooving equally interesting.

'Ten Ducks', would that be 'gumi dhadha' (excuse me if the grammar is wrong)?

As it turns out a number of surnames are derived from animals:
(Trevor) Garwe = crocodile
(Tinashe) Hove = fish
(Luke) Jongwe = cock, rooster
(Remembrance) Nyathi = buffalo (nyati)

Madondo(Trevor)- "dondo" means bush so madondo is the plural form. Madondo=bushes.
Hello plural! I'm learning something new every day. :D

'madhadha gumi' . 'madhadha makumi' is like saying 'tens ducks' . You only use makumi if its a number in the 20s or above, not for the teens. 'Kusakadza ' (verb)means 'wearing out' . Masakadza is past tense . Not so sure about Mutumbami, Mawoyo or Taibu though. As a matter of interest, how many of you speak shona? From the looks of it i wld say Takleg and Conant and maybe Jemisi. Im shona, by the way

not sure about the 'makumi' part. Might or might not be true. 'magumi' is not a word though
