Jarvis Interview

Post by CrimsonAvenger »

Leaving the country of your birth and setting up home 8,500 miles away is a big enough decision to make on its own.

Throw into the equation that by doing so you will also end a promising career at the very top of your profession, it becomes a very brave one.

But that’s exactly what Lancashire’s new signing Kyle Jarvis has done.

The 24-year-old was preparing for a home Test series against Pakistan when he made the tough decision to turn his back on Zimbabwe and sign for Lancashire as a Kolpak player.

It has brought to an end an eight-Test career which saw the highly-rated fast bowler claim 30 wickets.

A big factor in his decision was the on-going pay wrangle between the players and the Zimbabwe Cricket Union.

It has seen the players set up their own union and threaten to boycott the one-day and current Test series against Pakistan.

The games have gone ahead, but the players did sit out a training session before a one-day international.

But the uncertainty over pay was enough to push Jarvis away from Zimbabwe.

“It was a tough decision to stop playing for Zimbabwe, but it is the right decision,” Jarvis told M.E.N. Sport.

“There was no security because we weren’t getting paid and you can’t perform at your best if there is so much going on off the field. Even though the Zimbabwe lads are playing against Pakistan at the moment and I was in the squad for that series, I have no regrets about leaving.

“The guys were striking before the one-dayers because they had not been paid. They have been paid 40 per cent of last month’s salary. I am still owed money. I am owed two salaries and some bonuses.

“I don’t have any family in Zimbabwe. My mum is in New Zealand, my dad lives in Liberia and my sister is in Afghanistan, so moving away wasn’t that much of an issue in that respect.

“And I have always wanted to play county cricket.

“There are so many great cricketers who have played county cricket, and you look at the number of international players who come here to play in the competition.

“It has such a great tradition and history and I wanted to be a part of it.”

Jarvis, who played rugby for Zimbabwe Under-19s, is being seen as a long-term replacement for Glen Chapple, who will be 40 at the start of next season. But he may replace the skipper quicker than he thought, with Chapple battling with a hamstring tear ahead of the final LV= County Championship home match of the season against Leicestershire at Emirates Old Trafford, which starts tomorrow.

If Chapple is ruled out, Jarvis is likely to make his debut, although Oliver Newby will also be in consideration.

It could be a debut to remember with the Red Rose able to secure promotion with 18 points and take the Division Two title if they claim 23 points.

Although Jarvis, who took five-wickets for the second team against Scotland A last month, is keen to play in the first-team before the end of the season, he is also planning to be at Lancashire for the rest of his career.

“There were a couple of counties who were interested, but when the Lancashire deal came through then I jumped at it,” said Jarvis, who has played for Mashonaland Eagles in Zimbabwe and for Central District in New Zealand.

“It is an awesome set-up. It is without doubt one of the best in England.

“I knew a few of the lads in the side. Paul Horton and Tom Smith had played in Zimbabwe recently and I played against Steven Croft in New Zealand.

“I have signed a three-year deal, but that is just the start. I would be happy if I played the rest of my career with Lancashire.

“I know the conditions in England will suit me. When I have played here, I have always been quiet successful.

“I am looking forward to making a difference to the team and if Chappie isn’t fit then, hopefully, I can get a chance. I want to play before the end of the season.”

Jarvis’s international career may not yet be over. His ambition is to play for England one day, although to qualify alone he has to be resident for seven years.

“The long-term goal is to play for England, but it is a seven-year qualification period so that is a long way down the line,” he said.

“I just want to make a difference in the Lancashire side first.”

I still cant cop him saying he wants to be a pommie he hasnt even been there for 5 mins .....

He is kidding himself aswell no way will they select a 31 year old quickie who isnt even a pommie ...

I can only think he is just trying to say the right things to keep everyone at Lancashire happy ....

From that interview he doesn't really sound like he has much love for Zimbabwe anymore ....

Who knows he may come back one day if things get better but i really doubt it .....

Darren Pattinson and Boyd Rankin (similar cases) made their England debut at 29. So...

Yes, that is the biggest takeaway from that interview. He does not even have any remote intents of coming back. So, he is gone. It does not matter if he makes Eng setup or not as it is too far away in future.

Yes, clearly, his priority was financial security. And he is sugarcoating stuff in these interviews to be politically correct, as you say. If international cricket was priority, he would have thoughts of staying back (or at least wait till the end of Pak series and get a couple more tests under his belt) or move to NZ. The whole thing is driven by financial security, which is not wrong anyway.

So, he has clarity of his priorities, good for him.

Don't worry. The Poms will select him for a ODI/T20 against Zimbabwe, and then throw him away like a toerag.

Yeah I dont blame the guy for taking off for the cash Im in a similar position at work where I need to make a move for more cash its just part of life I just think it takes away from international sport when people make comments like that about representing a country you have no links to ....

He'd be captain for that match, too. They so love to run salt into the wound. (Hi, Eoin Morgan!)

This Pakistan series has been the perfect tonic for Jarvis' defection.

You say this as if England will play international cricket against Zimbabwe anytime soon.

I don't think he's saying he wants to "be English", he's made the move for financial reasons and he wants to maximise his earning potential. I don't think he'll play for England at any point either, but he's hardly going to say he doesn't want to. This interview makes me think he feels stung and burned out by the mismanagement in Zimbabwe cricket, and frankly I don't blame him in the slightest for what he's done.
