Is Harare Sports Club the nicest ground in world cricket?

Post by brmtaylor.com admin »

What is the nicest venue you've been to?

In Australia most stadiums are concrete jungles characterised by bad seats, expensive drinks and junk food and insane ticket prices.
HSC is pretty comfortably the best venue I've watched cricket at.

I have a feeling some grounds in Sri Lanka, like Galle, might be able to tick all the boxes that HSC does. I've seen postage stamps bigger than some NZ grounds. Indian and Bangladeshi grounds look like concrete jungles to me, I'm sure there's some nice small county grounds in Themiddleofnowhereshire in England, and the West Indian grounds look completely deserted (no atmosphere).

So my vote is for HSC.

New Zealand probably has the most scenic grounds, particularly in Queenstown. I think the English grounds have managed to modernise without losing all their charm, and Newlands in South Africa is simply spectacular.

Absolutely, its one of the great sight, full of greenery, this ground will look best if Zimbabwe Cricket settle all their payment disputes and install flood light for day night cricket. Zimbabwe Cricket will earn more if day night cricket begins in Zimbabwe, as huge crowds will turn up after they finish there office and also students returning from schools & colleges

Although those lighting towers are a bit of an eye-sore.

Taupo in NZ is stunning, not sure why they don't play much there anymore, but the relatively smaller size of the grounds take away the overall cricket experience a bit in other grounds, too many sixes hit, etc. Galle and Hambantota in SL are beautiful too, and yes, Newlands in SA and the newly added Dharamsala in India. HSC is right up there for me too.

I've only seen HSC on the tele, but what I have seen I like. I also like Galle and some of the Sri Lankan grounds.

I agree that England has so many grounds that some must be quite nice.

As for the West Indian grounds, it all depends. For a good test match there will be quite a bit of atmosphere. You get more atmosphere with ODIs (Providence in Guyana in particular can have an insane atmosphere when there is a good ODI on). It's a similar story with the T20s (most grounds are full and enthusiastic for the CPL).

If the team performance for tests in the UAE can be built upon (and the performances in the T20s and ODIs were just blips) then there might be some better atmospheres for tests in the West Indies come the next few home series.

New lands is a stunner but I think my favourite is the ground in Sri Lanka that is surrounded by a castle. Not sure which it is though but it's looks unreal ......

^That would be Galle, right next to the Galle Fort. Also right next to the ocean.

The best grounds IMO are in NZ. The small Test grounds where you can sit on the grassy embarkment.
