While it probably a forlorn expectation, there should be a closer association with South Africa.
I believe (naively) a normal season should start with a South African 'A' team tour Zimbabwe. They can play 2-3 three day games against teams like Board presidents XI & such to give the local internationals game practice. Then the full South African side can tour which incorporating a test, one dayer & 20/20.

Then the season continues. Zimbabwe get the one off test against other tourists. During the season, Zimbabwe 'A' tour South Africa & at the end of the summer, Zimbabwe tour South Africa for a one off test. If there are 2 countries touring South Africa, Zimbabwe get 4 tests plus anything with Afgan & ireland & maybe Bangladesh.

The Zimbabwe 'A' tour recreates in part the participation in the UCB bowl competition of the 90s.

Yes, I know. Heaps of plot holes, no money, negative thoughts, apathy & the rest. But, to achieve, you have to believe.

We will just play Afghanistan and Ireland and they'll beat us regularly to the point where a win against these sides will be celebrated like the rest win against Pakistan in 2013 ......
We really have fallen away terribly.

Zimbabwe must find themselves very lucky that they have been clubbed with Afghanistan & Ireland. At least they will get now some regular cricket with hese teams and occasional test matches in South Africa when visiting team visits there. They have to improve their cricket and aleast be at par with Ireland & Afghanistan. Main problem with Zimbabwe is not talent, its the condition of economy as whole.

I agree ...
Zimbabwe is the worst team with test status so I agree with ICC...
Prove yourself by beating Afghanistan & Ireland & sometimes Bangladesh then you can get respect
