2007 was not very good to be honest. At that time we didn't need a 16 team WC with 4 groups. It put a lot of emphasis on 2-3 games initially + the threat of rain, so it didn't make sense.

14 with 2 groups is just fine, like we had in 2003. It was my most liked format.
Yeah if competitive games is the point having a restricted top n teams only WC makes the most sense. A 3 team WC featuring England India and Australia playing each other 6 times each with a final would theoretically be most competitive.

10 team was a good idea when it was conceived but now I think 14 teams is the optimal number. By the time 2027 rolls around who knows.

To add…2007 wasn’t actually that competitive after the group stage. Bangladesh and Ireland didn’t really compete in the Super 8 stage, except the one game where BD best SA.

I don't think 10 teams was a good idea even back in 2013 or 14 when it was announced. I think we should have stuck to 14 team WC.

let's look at what a 16-team WC would look like

Group A
Australia
Sri Lanka
Afghanistan
Oman

Group B
Pakistan
Bangladesh
West Indies
Netherlands

Group C
India
South Africa
Zimbabwe
Nepal

Group D
New Zealand
England
Scotland
Ireland

Now to me that looks like a really good schedule of matches, sure there will be the odd blow-out, but I'd expect a really good showing from the top 14-nations, with some concerns about the Nepal games v Ind & RSA plus also Oman v Aus. But the rest looks pretty solid, and that's how a proper WC should be scheduled, not with these super groups all so India can play 9 or so games guaranteed.
