I wonder if anyone won the money...

Post by brmtaylor.com admin »

MTN has been offering 500 rand to anyone who catches a 6 in the crowd, and as nobody had caught any of the sixes hit in Zimbabwe, the prize money was up to R2500 yesterday. Apparently entry to the ground was free and the turnout was still poor :(

Harare, Mar 03, 2008 (The Herald/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- SCYL | news | PowerRating | PR Charts -- Cricket lovers in Harare stand a chance to pocket R2500 - yes a cool two thousand and five hundred South African rands - during tomorrow's MTN Domestic Championship match between the Zimbabwe Chevrons and the bizhub Highveld Lions at Harare Sports Club.
By the way, the money is handed over to the lucky "fielder" on the spot and the fans do not pay anything to get into Harare Sports Club -- entry is FREE!

MTN, a South Africa-based telecommunications giant, offers R500 to a spectator who catches a six from the stands and the money has not been claimed in the four matches played in Zimbabwe so far.

As a result, the unclaimed money has accumulated to R2000 and it gets to R2500 for tomorrow's match, which will be the last in Harare.

The Zimbabwe Chevrons -- who are guests in the South African domestic limited overs championship played 45-overs aside- have played four matches at home so far and the matches have produced 22 sixes.

Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo has had 15 of them in two defeats to the Nashua Titans and the Warriors while the other seven were at Harare Sports Club as the Zimbabwe Chevrons beat champions, Cape Cobras and the Nashua Dolphins. Unfortunately, none of them were taken in the crowd by the spectators although the turnout has been disappointing. So effectively there will be a lot at stake for both the players and spectators when the game gets underway tomorrow. The spectators will be going for the R2500 cash prize while the Zimbabwe Chevrons need a big win against the Lions to keep their faint semi-final hopes alive. Of course a semi-final slot is no longer in Zimbabwe's hands, but there is still reason to fight all the way to the final game and avoid finishing bottom of the seven-team championship.

After all there is need to impress Cricket South Africa and their six franchises so that the Zimbabwe side is retained in next year's South African calendar as their domestic tournaments provide the locals with worthy competition. The good thing ahead of tomorrow's game is that the Zimbabwe Chevrons have won their two matches at Harare Sports Club so far and both against tough teams.

The trend looks set to continue tomorrow. Remember that one has to be in the stands at Harare Sports Club tomorrow from 9.30 in the morning to stand a chance to catch a six and grab the R2500 cash prize.

The Herald reports that both Williams and Chigumbura are out of today's match against Warriors - Williams hasn't recovered from his ankle injury yet (on crutches for at least a few more days, apparently), Chigumbura pulled a hamstring during the match against Lions. Neither are expected back before the final match against Eagles in Bulawayo on Sunday.

Probably the best side available if Williams and Chigumbura are still injured.

I would still like to see Rainsford given a chance though and 3 spinners does seem a little over the top to me.

Dabengwa is out again, just as he plays a match winning innings

Not exactly cracking along at the moment, 17-1 in the 7th over and Taibu the man out for 3.

Hamilton's playing a good 'un, by the sounds of it - and poor Taylor's hardly getting a look-in (he needs a good innings at the moment, too).
15.4 Theron to Masakadza, SIX, huge hit over long on disappears over the roof and into the valley, another ball will be needed
