Butcher to experiment with opening order

Post by zimfan1 »

The Zimbabwe Cricket committees decision to drop Vusi Sibanda for the tour of New Zealand will see Hamilton Masakadza promoted to the top of the batting order in yet another experiment that might prove costly for the national team.
Sibanda, who was omitted from the team because of his decision to play grade cricket in Australia, had become the regular opener for Zimbabwe not only in the Test side, but all three formats of the game.

Zimbabwe coach Alan Butcher hinted this in an interview with NewsDay Sport yesterday that although the technical team would have loved to have Sibanda in the team, they had no choice but to respect the cricket committees decision.

You are always likely to miss good players when they arent there, but its also another opportunity for the other players to come through, he said in reference to Sibandas absence. But we have to move on and respect the decision that was made by the Zimbabwe Cricket committee.

We are now looking ahead to try and find a solution. I have spoken to Hamilton (Masakadza), it wont be an unknown territory for him to open the batting as he has been there before in the limited overs format, said Butcher.

The decision to tinker with the opening partnership brings back memories of the World Cup campaign where Charles Coventry was preferred ahead of Masakadza in an ill-advised experiment that did not yield the desired results.

Masakadza, who has opened the batting in the ODIs and T20s, will fill the void left by Sibanda in the Test side where he will partner Tino Mawoyo leaving the crucial number three spot up for grabs.

This could give Stuart Matsikenyeri an opportunity to add to his eight previous Test caps after making a return to the team after a two-year absence on the back of his consistent form in the early stages of the domestic season.

Rookies Foster Mtizwa and Regis Chakabva will also be in the picture, but the selectors could decide to move skipper Brendan Taylor up to number three which could affect the balance of the whole team as it would leave the middle order vulnerable.

Butcher said he expected the bowling department to play an important role during the tour.

Obviously it was a big blow losing Christopher Mpofu as he was one of our experienced bowlers which is why it was nice to see Brian Vitori and Graeme Cremer coming back into the side.

They bring a different element to our game that we were missing last November and hopefully they will adjust well to the conditions, said Butcher.

The national cricket team, which leaves tomorrow for New Zealand will commence the tour with a warm-up match at the Harry Barker Reserve cricket ground in Te Hapara, Gisborne ,from January 21-23 before the one-off Test set for January 26 at McLean Park in Napier.

The team will then square off in limited overs competitions starting with the three-match ODIs and two T-20s from February 3-14.

Zimbabwe squad:
Brendan Taylor (capt), Hamilton Masakadza, Tinotenda Mawoyo, Tatenda Taibu, Malcolm Waller, Ray Price, Elton Chigumbura, Regis Chakabva, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Foster Mutizwa, Prosper Utseya, Graeme Cremer, Keegan Meth, Kyle Jarvis, Brian Vitori, Shingi Masakadza.

Old man butcher should realize this is an international team and not a piece of steak that he can chop and change. If he chooses to use Chakabva at the top of the order then he should take responsibility for that decision. Regis has such a wide range of shots that he can get the team off to a flyer. He will probably eat balls and slowdown the runrate along with Hamilton or Tino. Then it will be all catching up and we all know Zim do not have the class to turn games around once control is lost.
Is this some kind of sick joke.

Chakabva, Matsikenyeri, and Mutizwa shouldn't even be in the side, let alone be used in the top 3. From the current squad the team should be;

1. Brendan Taylor
2. Tino Mawoyo
3. Hamilton Masakadza
4. Tatenda Taibu
5. Malcolm Waller
6. Matsi/Mutizwa/Chakabva (doesn't matter which one, none of them will do any better than the other)
7. Elton Chigumbura
8. Keegan Meth
9. Ray Price
10. Brian Vitori
11. Kyle Jarvis
Neil Johnson, Alistair Campbell, Murray Goodwin, Andy Flower (w), Grant Flower, Dave Houghton, Guy Whittall, Heath Streak (c), Andy Blignaut, Ray Price, Eddo Brandes

yeah, you may have to elaborate on that one!!

while you ponder..let me say that i have missed in this article what the experiment is we are all aware that Matsi, Taylor and Hammie are tried and tested failures in the 1/2 position. So unless they actually put Forster in to open there is nothing experimental here. Forster,Matsi, BRMT and Hammie I will expect similar results from in the openning slot

I think Taylor has the quality to succeed as an opener. He has some success as an opener throughout his career in all forms of the game so he has experience.

nope, the records show that he and Matsi have the same experience and "success" in the 1/2 position in tests. Taylor will struggle as opener as he always has done.I rate Taylor very highly but he's making runs in the middle - shores it up - and does not do well up front. Why ruin the one batting success we can point to

I think if Vusi was injured we'd have the same problem. Mutizwa is the next in line in terms of performance ( Craig aside ) and he should slot in. Hami opening has not much more risk than Hami at 3.

Im not sure about that; Hamis is the most techinicaly astute of the batsmen remaining to open. In any case one must argue that opemnng poses more risks for nearly everyone, except the Chibhabhas (and a few years back Vusi) who are patently weak against slow bowlers.

Eugene and to a lesser extent brmtaylor will insist at every opportunity that Taylor will be better served as an opener. Quite how this is so I'm not sure, when all evidence statistics wise, and technical, reaveal that the captain plays much better in the middle. The word middle is an arbitrary used here: one must understand why it is that he seems to perfom more when batting in that middle; and once you realise that, you will notice in what kind of pitches Taylor has scored big while opening.

No, battng Taylor up at the top is an absolute waste. He gets a good first baller and what happens then? So there's still Hami and Waller to come?

Chakabva I can understand your gripe, I too have raised it with reason (we already have 3 keepers in Taibu, Mutizwa and Taylor and he isnt exactly making tons in FC or List A)

Matsi, if you are talking Test then I may just agree, his FC hasnt brought the world to a stop, but for ODI and T20 I am at a loss what you base his exclusion on. His T20 tournament efforts were there for all to see, coupled with a very good Pro50 season so far, top runs scorer, average of 69, SR of 98, a 100 and a 50 make a compelling case, unless all you rate a player on is his name...

Mutizwa's FC season has been amazing (by Zim standards), highest Zim qualified runs getter (Ballance and Wessels not Zim), ave 68, 2 hundreds, and a 50...

I don't know what qualification you want...(should they legally change their names to Craig Ervine perhaps?)

I hate to sound like I oppose everything you say eugene, but you do come up with the most prejudice (and at times favoritism laced), none objective points. I wish you would stop and evaluate what you are writing.
1. Mawoyo 2. Duffin 3. Sibanda 4. Taylor 5. Masakadza 6. Williams 7. Chakabva 8. Creamer 9. Jarvis 10. Rainsford 11. Mpofu

I think the title is a little misleading, Butcher is very clear as to what FORCED changes will come to the fore, and its not really experimental, as he alludes:
We are now looking ahead to try and find a solution. I have spoken to Hamilton (Masakadza), it wont be an unknown territory for him to open the batting as he has been there before in the limited overs format, said Butcher.
The rest for me stays the same, well sort of (everyone moves one up and Chigs slots into 7), with Chigs benefiting from Vusi's demise in my books, as Mutizwa was already due a debute, and Chigs would make way at 7, alas blue eyed boy lives to play another test (good luck to him, and may he replicate his good form with the bat)...

1. Hami 2. Mawoyo 3. Taylor 4. Taibu 5. Waller 6. Mutizwa 7. Chigs 8./9./10./11. : Bolwers

For ODI (Mawoyo drops out, Taylor moves up to partner Hami and Matsi slots into 3....the benefector here is Mutizwa who is a decent ODI player but would sit out if Vusi was around, Matsi has earned a shot)

1. Hami 2. Taylor 3.Matsi 4. Taibu 5. Waller 6. Mutizwa 7./ 8./9./10./11. :Chigs + Bolwers
