You don’t have to ban them or suspend them.

Just send them back to associate membership. The criteria for associate membership stipulates exemptions for women’s cricket are allowed.

If they have FM voting rights and an FM funding allocation then they will have to comply with FM rules.

It’s one or the other, it’s their choice.
Getting demoted from FM status is effectively a ban/suspension.

At end of the day, I suspect the ICC will remain non-commital and the white countries will boycott Afghanistan who will really only play against the Asian sides and occaisionally against Zimbabwe and maybe Ireland apart from ICC events. They may have walk-outs in ICC events if an England or Australia have enough points to qualify without needing to beat Afghanistan.

Yes but is he advocating for Thailand's men's team to be promoted on the basis of the women's team beating Bangladesh once?

I am sorry but men's and women's sports are two separate things. USA has the best women's soccer team in the world, but their men's team is mediocre. Their men shouldn't be automatically crowned champions just because the women are. If women's cricket is cricket, then what is men's cricket?

In the same vein, the Afghan men's team and players shouldn't be penalized for their government's policies. There were some calls for the Iranian soccer team to be expelled from the FIFA WC in Qatar, even though the majority of the Iranian players oppose their government's policies. Would have been totally counterproductive.

If we parse the issue, there seems to be 2 criticisms:

1) The lack of women's cricket.
2) Government interference

As far as women's cricket goes, I just don't see how stripping the entire board of Full Member status gets women to start playing the game. Seems counter productive to me.

Gov interference happens in all the Asian nations. The BCB president is an MP in the parliament. The PCB operates under the perview of the Federal gov and the government of India, interferes with the BCCI playing against Pakistan in any bilateral fixture.

No on is suggesting any response, either way, will help women's cricket in Afghanistan. That is clearly never going to happen, in any form, under Taliban rule.

But it is unjust that other full members are forced to spend significant amounts on women's cricket development when Afghanistan get a free pass.

Why should Afghanistan get the same funding as Ireland, despite Ireland having to fulfill a women's international calendar, fund an entire women's pro system, central contracts, women and girls pathways at all levels etc. How unfair is that.

Afghanistan should not be receiving FM funding or FM voting rights if they can not fulfil FM membership criteria.

And I agree - you raise a good point about government interference in many Asian boards.

It's a constant amusement that Zimbabwe were suspended so quickly and easily, whilst numerous other boards (including India) get away with the same thing or worse every year. The ICC is of course a failed organisation in general.

Yeah the ICC is a “failed” organization just like FIFA or the UN in terms of really creating an equitable system of rules and Justice. Just like the UN resolutions only apply to member states excluding NA/EU/Israel.

I will agree with the CA on one point. Basic human rights is certainly not politics.
