Mustard joins Mountaineers

Mustard (29) has 10 ODI caps for England after making his debut away against Sri Lanka in 2007 when he was called up to replace the injured Matt Prior.

I seriously have a problem with us bringing in wicket-keeper bastmen. In Taibu we have arguably the best in the business in international cricket so our youngsters have got someone to look up to and guide them already. What we lack are people to replace him, and with Wheater, Wessels & 'Mustard' we're cutting our supply short. This is stupid planning from Dominus if they are responsible for recruiting these palyers, or should that be directed at the coaches and CEOs of the respective franchises! Mutizwa and Taylor couldn't even be trusted for the 5day game, and an undercooked specialist keeper Chakabva had to be risked for greater sacrifices to the team's balance instead. They'll probably go for Maregwede next time!

When BRM said there's a LONG QUEUE of County players waiting to play in our Logan Cup, he neglected to point out that the list comprises of average wicketkeepers whom we can do without (please send me that list if you can)! If we're so desperate for quality to spruce up our Logan Cup then try other Full Members. I'm sure you can get proper batsmen who won't hide behind their keeping! There's plenty in the east.

Good player, he'll be a valuable addition. Solid wicketkeeper, has scored heavily over the last couple of years as well, particularly explosive opening the batting in one-day cricket. He's also skipper of Durham, so he should add a lot of experience and know-how to the Mountaineers set-up.

I kind of agree with Hhm. We dont need keepers. But I think he is probably being included for batting, surely?

In the Mountaineers set up there are a couple of youngsters who can keep and bat .The first name that comes into mind is Kevin Kasuza , though he needs guidance.Another name is Kudzi Sauramba..the talent is out there but we are not just developing it ..

Without agreeing to the vernom and labels used, I agree with your line of argument hhm, we cannot limit our own for foreign talent, I really think Taibu, Taylor, Mutizwa and Chakabva should by LAW keep for their franchises and if they are in the same franchise they should be moved to ensure this, and all our bowlers, barring injury bowl for their franchises, and all our opener open for their franchise, etc...

Lets learn from the South Africans, I remember when Taibu wanted to move to the Cape Cobras, a stink was raised about him dislodging Tsolakele, and this was averted. Lets be careful who we let in. If Mustard is willing to operate as a specialist batter, and is not stunting anyone's growth so be it, but not at the expense of our own...

Couldn't agree more with hhm. The amount of wicket-keepers brought in this season is staggering. The Eagles have Bishop, the Rhinos Wessels, Tuskers have Wheater (at least he didn't keep in the last Logan Cup match, so maybe there's a bit of sense trickling down to the franchises), and the Mountaineers already have Eckersley (who kept in the Pro40, but again not in the recent Logan Cup match) and now Mustard. Makes absolutely no sense to me. Only the Eagles have the excuse that their two frontline keepers were away with the national side, so they had to look for a replacement.

I disagree. Yes we have plenty of youngsters but what do they need? Professionals to show them the ropes. We need to improve the general standards of domestic cricket and that will need a short term infusion of pros who will set the bar for the youngsters to aspire to. If the Logan Cup standards approach the County Championship ones (at least the 2nd division) then in a few years when our debutants approach tests they will be better prepared than Jarvis, Meth, Ncube & others now.

Looking at the Durham website he was their leading batter in 20/20 and at the top of the averages in 4 days and 1 day cricket.

He has the ability it seems to be a specialist batter. He is also captain of durham so i would hope his leadership skills and experience will help the younger keepers.

I think it looks a good signing.
