The Kenyan national team were started their tour of Zimbabwe on a disappointing note after losing to the Mashonaland Eagles by three wickets with two balls to go in a Twenty20 friendly at Harare Sports Club on Wednesday at Harare Sports Club. The visitors won the toss and chose to bat first setting a target of 124 runs for six the loss of six wickets. Zimbabwe Cricket domestic franchises MidWest Rhinos and the Mashonaland Eagles are hosting the Kenyan national team as part of their preparations for the Stanbic Bank 20 series starting on the 24th of November.

Team Captain Collins Obuya top scored in the match with an inspiring 44 from 32 balls, Duncan Allan who opened the batting chipped in with a handy 15 runs. Although the Mash Eagles used seven bowlers and each almost got a wicket, it was the veteran left-arm spinner Ray Price who seized any massive run scoring with some attacking economic bowling. Price finished without a wicket but only considered 18 from his allotted four overs. Nehemiah Odhiambo finished off the innings with a quick cameo of 30 from 38 balls.

Mash Eagles were convinced that the total was low enough to take on the Kenyans without too much diligence. They lost early wickets with the captain Stuart Matsikenyeri among the low scorers, caught for just five runs. Elton Chigumbura (24) played his natural game and upped the run rate with his partner Foster Mutizwa (34), a partnership which drove the Eagles a step closer to the target, though not within safety. The Eagles needed 10 from the last over and capitalised on some sloppy Kenyan fielding and managed to push through a victory with two balls to spare.

I've noticed that Odhiambo is fearless and very capable low order batsman, plus he bowls very quick. Probably faster than all our current bowlers. It's a pity, with Elton on&off we could've gotten more out of him were he Zimbabwean. All those lost years.

I agree with hhm that he does have a bit of pace about him, think he was bowling around 85mph in the world cup, would just like a speed gun in the T20 to see how quick vitori and jaris are bowling as alought Jarvis hit 145kph in South africa, i get the feeling that he was around 138kph in the New Zealand series after making changes to his action.

Sloan, as with eugene, I gave wise advice that it's best to verify certain things I (&others) say before jumping to conclusions about me making unsubstantiated comments. You will often find that they are factual! Odhiambo's fastest ball in the World Cup was 144.7kph(89.9mph) against SL, and bowled a lot of balls over 140kph. Throughout the tournament he consistantly touched well over 136kph(85mph) as zimfan pointed out! I suspect he was even faster when he was a few years younger, and my point was that had he been Zimbabwean we could've made him even faster, as well as more of a top allrouder!

Jarvis holds back. He doesn't run in hard and for the most part he had a brace across his waist during games for Zim in the Ban&Pak series. He's on a recovery path, but just like Elton I can tell his action has changed enough to wonder if he may ever hit those speeds again, let alone consistently bowl 138kph. Ncube looked to me to be bowling faster when they were operating together. As for Vitori, I was surprised when someone said that against Bangladesh, he bowled quicker than Jarvis, who was hardly pacey himself during his spells.

As it is Mpofu(like Shingi&Nicholson) operates between 132-136kph. His fastest ball in the WC was 148kph(suspect there was a problem with that speed gun), but he can consistently touch 137-8kph if he wishes. For the most part Panyagara and Rainsford operate at 130-134kph. Contrary to all your conveniently falsified arguments or wishes otherwise, I think that applies to all our bowlers - Jarvis, Ncube & Vitori included. I stand to be corrected, however the way I see it, they may have the odd balls which go over 135kph, but in fairness they all operate between 130-134 and I'd expect that from all of them in a Test match. So enough with undervaluing Rainsford & Panyangara's pace. :)

Does anybody if Gayle has signed yet?

I think the Mountaineers could be a good bet for the T20 although they have a fairly young side.

sorry Jemisis but these guys ARE the bit part bowlers i was refering to. Why is Garwe overlooked. That is a genuine question, he is one of a few players i have never seen, not on legal, semi-legal highlights nor in the flesh
Hall and Chigs have done fine at domestic level. Garwe may be unlucky. Not disagreeing with that.
