[Match Thread] Zimbabwe vs Sri Lanka: 2nd Test, Harare

Post by brmtaylor.com admin »

I thought Zim went alright in the first Test. The bowling was lacklustre at times (it was a very flat pitch though) and our middle order was pretty abysmal, but despite that we put up a pretty good fight.

Hopefully we build on that in the 2nd Test. If we play to our best, SL is a team we can beat.

We normally get worse the longer a tour goes, hopefully this is not the case against SL.

Big News is that DRS is going to be used. Good move by the ZC.

Based on Tristan Holme's article where he mentioned ZIM don't appeal as convincingly as other teams, and Crimsonavenger's observations on the positions that ZIM batters get into, the DRS is going to be very interesting in this series.

There was a record number of reviews in the recent Bangladesh-England Tests, indicating the umpires were getting a lot of calls wrong. Moeen Ali was given out 4 times and the decision was reversed each time. Incidentally he was out lbw before the 4 that were given, and we didn't review and he survived. Funny game.

Hope even the presence of DRS improves the umpiring accountability

Thats also what I was thinking. The real test will be what kind of calls the umpires start giving when the reviews are gone and there are still 50 overs before they get refilled again.

Plus, expect our guys to stupidly waste the DRS / be overcautious and not use it up even when it is genuinely needed. Basically, our inexperience with using the system will show. But it is all part of the learning process and hopefully we will get better with it over time.

Sincerely hoping that it shouldn't turn counterproductive against our batsmen,as the umpires might still rob us of marginal calls. But drs will defintely help us picking up more wickets, with the new rules in effect.

I think batsmen have an easier time with that. You know if you've got a edge or a glove on lbws and if its a caught behind appeal you know if you didn't nick it. As far as the stumps go, a batsman should have a pretty good idea if it was hitting the stumps.

Bowling reviews are trickier. The bowler and WK have the best vantage point but even then its hard to spot feathertip edges or to know for sure if it was going on to hit the wickets.
